About the Wine
The 2021 vintage was absolutely legendary—Wine Spectator exploded with a 99-point score and declared: "This might be the best vintage in Tuscany's modern era."
Caiarossa is more than just a Tuscan estate—it’s a wine lover’s paradise. Nestled in the hills southeast of Pisa, this 31-hectare property produces wines that are nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment you taste their wines, it’s clear: Caiarossa doesn’t just grow grapes, they craft liquid magic.
The estate’s flagship wine, Caiarossa Toscana IGT, is an absolute masterpiece—a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, and Alicante, hand-harvested from the Podere Serra all'Olio vineyard. Each grape variety is treated with the utmost care, fermented separately in a gravity-flow system that preserves the wine’s purity. Aged in a mix of new oak and concrete, this wine is luxury in a bottle—a rich, bold, yet elegant creation that practically sings with the essence of Tuscany.
Acquired in 2004 by Eric Albada Jelgersma, owner of the prestigious Château Giscours and Château du Tertre, Caiarossa has gone from strength to strength. The 2021 vintage is sensational, with vibrant energy and a complexity that promises decades of aging potential. If you’re looking for a wine that’s bold, refined, and destined for greatness, look no further than Caiarossa—it’s as good as Tuscan wine gets.
Given what you pay for the big names like “Tig” and the “Aia’s”, this wine, which scores similarly to those wines, looks like the highest rated and best value SuperTuscan.
Aging: Oak included 30% new wood for 14 months.
Tasting Notes
30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 6% Petit Verdot, and 2% Grenache, crafted with precision. The wine opens with a complex bouquet of bramble fruits, cloves, and Mediterranean scrub, followed by dark black and blue fruit aromas. On the palate, it's full-bodied with velvety tannins, a tight grip, and a refreshing natural acidity. Rich yet elegant, the wine showcases great potential with time, offering a long finish that is both vibrant and savory. A stunning blend with a bright future.
Critical Reviews
Purplish tinge in the glass. Aromas of cloves, generous bramble fruit and dried eucalyptus. The attack is firm and dense, with a full body and velvety tannins of great extraction on the mid-palate and refreshing natural acidity. Good integration of oak at the end. Potential for the long haul, but drinkable in one to two years. ~96 James Suckling
2021 was a demanding but ultimately rewarding vintage in much of Tuscany, with a warm March encouraging an early budbreak. The summer was hot and dry, with some welcome rain arriving in early September. Warm and sunny days returned for harvest. This is a wine with great potential but at this stage it is still quite closed. ‘We do very little racking to avoid oxygen during ageing,’ states general manager Jérôme Poisson. With time in the glass, fleshy black and blue fruit aromas and flavours emerge, along with hints of Mediterranean scrub. Velvety tannins keep a tight grip, while the fruit sapidity is underlined by a lovely vein of salinity and a ferrous twist. Long and poised, some savoury, earthy elements make themselves known on the finish. 30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Grenache, each vinified separately before blending and ageing for around 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. ~95 Decanter
The organic and biodynamic Caiarossa 2021 Caiarossa is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Grenache, in descending order of importance. It shows a velvety and darkly concentrated appearance with pretty richness and deep color saturation. These results are balanced and bright in this gorgeous vintage, and I especially like the wine's freshness that seems to shine from its core. The mouthfeel is more streamlined than it is bulky, and that quality adds a sense of lasting elegance. Aging in oak included 30% new wood for 14 months. Production is 37,700 bottles. ~95 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
The 2021 Caiarossa is an elegant, sophisticated red. Crushed flowers, spice, blood orange and pomegranate open first. Pliant and medium in body, with terrific energy, the 2021 has much to offer. It’s energy and overall persistence are notable. Bright saline notes support the vibrant finish. ~94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
