About The Wine

CADE is part of one of Napa's most quietly ambitious wine families — the PlumpJack Group. Three wineries, each one a different expression of Napa Cabernet depending on where you grow it: PlumpJack on the valley floor, Odette in Stags Leap, and CADE up here on Howell Mountain at 1,800 feet. Each one distinct, each one serious. CADE is the mountain chapter — and when they built it, they went further than most, making it one of Napa's first LEED Gold-certified wineries. That means the building itself was designed and constructed to the highest environmental standards: energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable materials.

The 2021 vintage draws fruit from the original CADE estate vineyard and the 13th Vineyard on Howell Mountain, a combination that amplifies the site's complexity. Winemaking at CADE emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the mountain terroir — volcanic, well-drained soils, intense sun exposure, and cool evening temperatures — to express itself fully. The blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon is rounded out with Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, varieties that add aromatic lift, floral notes, and mid-palate richness without diluting the wine's mountain spine.

2021 in Napa Valley was a year shaped by careful farming following a challenging 2020 fire season. Low yields concentrated flavors, and a long, even growing season with warm days and cool nights allowed for excellent phenolic ripeness. The result across Howell Mountain was a vintage that is more accessible in youth than many prior years, yet with the structural integrity — deep tannins, bright acidity — to reward a decade or more of cellaring.

88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Merlot, all sourced from Howell Mountain's volcanic hillside soils. On the nose, hints of pine, sage, and bouquet garni set a distinctly mountain-driven aromatic tone, with ripe blue fruits, violets, iron, and dark cherry emerging underneath. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with succulent dark plum, mocha, spice, leather, and menthol layered through the mid-palate — rich and mouth-filling without tipping into excess. The Malbec and Petit Verdot contribute aromatic complexity and structural depth. The finish is long and velvety, with the texture of polished tannins. Drinking window: 2024–2033+, with another 15 years of prime drinking ahead.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cade Estate combines fruit from the original vineyard and 13th Vineyard. It shows hints of pine and sage on the nose, accenting a base of ripe black cherries, while the full-bodied palate is concentrated. It's rich without being overdone, with a long, velvety finish. ~93 Robert Parker

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes almost all from the estate on Howell Mountain and is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot. It has classic Howell Mountain style in its ripe blue fruits, violets, iron, and bouquet garni-like aromatics, and is medium to full-bodied, with a rich, mouth-filling texture and outstanding length. It has another 15 years of prime drinking ahead of it. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is wonderfully alluring. The purity of the fruit is quite striking. Bold and creamy, with terrific depth, the 2021 is surprisingly accessible for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Succulent dark plum, mocha, spice, leather and menthol are front and center. Dollops of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot add aromatic and flavor complexity. ~92 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
