About The Wine

Colgin has earned three perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker. The IX Estate Vineyard on Pritchard Hill is where those scores come from.

There was no 2020 IX Estate. The vintage didn't meet Winemaker Allison Tauziet's standard for these 20 acres, so nothing was bottled. The 2021 is the return — and it came back with 99 from Robert Parker, 99 from James Suckling, and 98 from both Vinous and Jeb Dunnuck.

What makes Pritchard Hill different: the vineyard sits above the Napa Valley floor, planted in volcanic rock and iron-rich clay. That elevation and geology give IX Estate its fingerprint — wild sage, juniper, and iron minerality that runs through every vintage regardless of conditions, and a structural tension that makes this a 25-to-30-year wine. Valley-floor Napa Cabernets don't age this way.

In 2017, Colgin became the only American wine invited into LVMH's private wine portfolio — the same group as Château Yquem and Château Cheval Blanc, two of the most celebrated wines in the world. LVMH owns the benchmarks. They added one American label. That's the placement.

Parker and Suckling both recommend holding until 2028 at minimum. Drinking window runs through the mid-2040s.

A Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Opens with raspberry, plum, and cocoa layered over IX Estate's unmistakable signature: wild sage, juniper, and crushed rock. Full-bodied on the palate with polished, firm tannins and a velvety grip. Saline minerality and graphite run through the mid-palate into a long, structured finish with notes of red currant and terra cotta. Clean, bright acidity holds the frame. Built for the cellar — best from 2028, drinking window through the mid-2040s.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Colgin's 2021 IX Estate is a rich, opulent example, with layers of ripe black cherries and dark chocolate punctuated by hints of sage and bay leaf, plus some vaguely floral notes (violets?). Full-bodied, concentrated, velvety and long, it's another terrific wine that showcases the potential of Pritchard Hill, the investment by the owners and the talent of the winemaking team. ~99 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Red currant, lead pencil and terra cotta aromas with some bay leaf and sage. Full-bodied with tight, firm tannins that are polished and very fine. Turns to graphite. Extremely long, refined, polished and exquisite. Best after 2028. ~99 James Suckling

The 2021 IX Estate is such an elegant wine. Sleek, aromatic and refined, the 2021 is one of the most polished young wines I have tasted from this site. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and mint abound. Silky and delineated, the 2021 is exceptionally beautiful and balanced. Clean saline notes and veins of tannin extend the explosive, sublime finish.~98 Vinous (Antonio Galloni)

I'd wager a Napa Valley legend in the making... Deep purple-hued, with awesome aromatics of pure cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and subtle floral hints, this has that rare mix of power and elegance that defines so many great wines. Full-bodied, concentrated, and flawlessly balanced, it has no shortage of structure and is going to need 7–8 years, if not a decade, to hit full maturity, where it will hold for 2–3 decades. ~98+ Jeb Dunnuck

There's some gorgeous flow to this red, with an overriding velvety feel to its crushed blackberry, açaí and loganberry fruit core, contrasted nicely by an underlying cast iron note. Alder, sage and sweet bay hints flicker seductively amid the fruit on the lengthy finish. Best from 2025 through 2045. ~96 Wine Spectator
