About The Wine

Crafted in Honour. Rooted in History.

Philip is more than a wine—it’s a tribute to one of the most remarkable figures in both American and Italian history. Philip Mazzei (1730–1816), a visionary political thinker and esteemed ancestor of the Mazzei family, was not only a close friend of Thomas Jefferson but also the man who first planted vines at Jefferson’s Monticello estate. His declaration that “all men are by nature equally free and independent” would echo through history, inspiring the very words that helped shape the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

In celebration of this enduring legacy, the Mazzei family created a Cabernet Sauvignon that bridges centuries and continents. Philip is born of two distinct Tuscan terroirs: Castello di Fonterutoli in the limestone-strewn hills of Chianti Classico, and Belguardo in the Maremma, where coastal breezes and sandstone soils infuse the wine with depth, energy, and finesse.

For 26 generations, the Mazzei family has been synonymous with Italian wine excellence—pioneering innovation while honoring tradition. Their deep respect for the land and unwavering pursuit of quality live on in every bottle of Philip: a wine of stature, soul, and singular provenance.

2021 was an epic year for Tuscany. Wine Spectator blessed this year with a near-perfect 99pt score and said: "This might be the best vintage in Tuscany’s modern era."

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Cloves, dark fruit, leather and savory complexity. Youthful, velvety tannins with crisp acidity, a full body and a spicy finish full of blond tobacco and coffee grounds. Drinkable after a year or two, but best from 2031. ~96 James Suckling

Rich and sleek in the sensory profile it shows notes of black plums, wild myrtle, lavender, hibiscus, green mandarin peel and toasted hazelnuts. Full body, perfectly ripe tannins and a finish of great grace and personality. Simply stunning. Drink now or age. ~95 WinesCritic.com

Aromas of black cherry and pepper add a bolt of energy to a nose that's otherwise defined by umami, savory notes of top soil, dark chocolate and coffee grinds. The palate is layers of blackberries, chocolate and more black cherries, but that peppery earthiness also endures. Carefully constructed, fine-grained tannins tame an electric current of acid on the finish. ~94 Wine Enthusiast

Brilliant dark ruby red. Intense nose of juicy plum, cherry, ripe raspberries, as well as some cold smoke and leather. Juicy on the palate, with well-defined fruit and acidity, great spice in the harmonious finish. ~93 Falstaff

Dark berry fruits studded with cloves and black chocolate, precise and carefully strewn with slate and wet rocks, great quality, easy to love, supple tannins, touch of austerity on the finish. 30% new oak for ageing, 225l mix of American and French barrels. Wine named in honour of the family’s ancestor Philip Mazzei, who worked with Thomas Jefferson on bringing viticulture to Virginia. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

The 2021 Philip, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a fine effort from the Mazzei family. Dried herbs, lavender, sage, mint and licorice play off a core of blue and purplish fruit. There's plenty to like—that’s for sure—but at the same time, the Cabernet suffers in comparison to Mazzei's superb set of Sangiovese-based wines. ~92 Vinous Media
