About The Wine

Ribera del Duero is Spain's heavyweight red-wine region — high-altitude, cold-night, structurally serious Tempranillo that drinks more like a top Napa Cab than a Rioja.

The famous bottle here is Pingus, which routinely tops $1,000. This is not that wine. This is the team behind Pingus' home estate doing something at the other end of the price ladder, and doing it very well.

Bodegas Montecastro was founded in 2000 by Alfonso de Salas, the Marqués de Montecastro y Llanahermosa. In 2014, Hacienda Monasterio — founded by Peter Sisseck of Dominio de Pingus — took over the winemaking and direction. That's when the wines started getting noticed. Decanter called it "one to watch." It's been on the watch list ever since.

The 2022 picked up 94 points from the Peñín Guide, 93 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and 92 from Tim Atkin MW.

Eighteen months in French oak, mature Tempranillo vines, limestone soils above 2,800 feet. This is what a serious Ribera del Duero looks like at a weeknight price.

Tempranillo-driven. Deep ruby-purple in the glass.

Aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackcurrant lift into chocolate, sweet spice, espresso, and a mineral, chalky lift from the limestone soils.

Full-bodied and concentrated, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long savory finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Style ,kind finish, defined aromas. Colour ,cherry, purple rim. Aroma ,fruit expression, red berry notes, floral, sweet spices. Flavour, fruity, good acidity, long ~ 94 Guía Penin.

The 2022 Montecastro is surprisingly harmonious and balanced, not showing any heat or excess ripeness despite the 14.5% alcohol on the label, which is not much for the zone and year, even if they harvest two weeks later than at Hacienda Monasterio. The Tempranillo is complemented with some 5% Merlot, and the oak is neatly integrated; they only used 20% new barrels. The wine s harmonious and balanced, going back to the "vino fino" style with surprisingly polished tannins. This is really impressive. It was a shorter crop, and they produced some 90,000 bottles. It was bottled in June 2024. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
