About the Wine
Clos des Jacobins, a cornerstone of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé classification, is a prestigious estate that blends history with modern winemaking excellence. Owned by Thibaut and Magali Decoster, this estate traces its roots to the 1700s, though the modern era began in 2004 when the Decosters took over the iconic Clos des Jacobins. The Decosters’ commitment to quality, alongside expert guidance from renowned consultants like Hubert de Boüard of Château Angélus, has significantly raised the profile of this exceptional vineyard.
Saint-Émilion itself is one of Bordeaux’s most revered regions, known for its limestone-rich terroir and the meticulous care lavished on its Grand Cru wines. The region’s Grand Cru designation is a step above regular Saint-Émilion wines, ensuring the highest quality with stricter production standards. The Decosters have embraced these restrictions and taken them a step further, continuously improving both vineyard practices and winemaking techniques to craft wines of distinction.
The 2022 Clos des Jacobins reflects the estate’s dedication to excellence, offering a refined expression of Saint-Émilion’s unique terroir. With a history steeped in tradition and a future guided by innovation, this wine is a testament to the Decosters' vision and the timeless elegance of Saint-Émilion.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95-98 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"
Aging: 18 months in 75% new French oak barrels
Tasting Notes
80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep and expressive, this wine balances power and finesse, unfolding with layers of dark fruit, subtle spice, and a refined structure. The limestone-rich terroir lends freshness and elegance, while aging in French oak adds depth and a velvety texture.
Critical Reviews
Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Delicate herbal savouriness, ripe cherries, some nougat, ripe plums in the echo. The palate has depth, cherries, mineral, taut tannins. An opulent, fruity style with a spicy finish. A reliable food wine for many occasions. ~95 Falstaff
Inky dark purple with high viscosity. Pure and floral with lavender, blackberry, cassis, chalk and mild oak. The palate shows great volume and concentration with grainy extract, powdery tannin, layer of floral dark fruit with a sense of sweetness yet remaining fresh and dry witha very long, polished and persistent finish. ~95 Andreas Larsson, Sommelier
Fine wood spices with rich dark cherries and smoked herbs. A touch of hazelnut chocolate too. Flavorful, full-bodied and fine-grained on the palate with a wealth of dusty tannins. Densely packed and long. Needs three more years to let the wood integrate. Try in 2029. ~94 James Suckling
The 2022 Clos des Jacobins is a wine of imposing depth yet also fine balance. Black cherry, plum, espresso, new leather, lavender and spice are all finely cut in a Saint-Émilion that offers an intriguing mix of body and energy. I would give this a few years in bottle, as the tannins are a bit imposing today. There's room to grow here. This is very nicely done. ~94+ Vinous Media
Plenty of impact on the opening, sweet damson and raspberry, manages to retain a sappiness to the fruit despite the concentrated inky depths of espresso, cocoa bean, sandalwood and tar. Magali and Thibault Decoster are owners at this 8.5ha estate. 90% new oak. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
The 2022 Clos des Jacobins is impressive, and it is safely up with the finest releases I’ve tasted from this château. Deep ruby/purple-hued, with a gorgeous perfume of spicy red and black fruits, chalky earth, and spice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a round, lush, powerful mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and outstanding length. It needs air to show at its best, so throw this in a decanter if drinking any time soon. It will ideally be given 3-4 years of bottle age, and it’s going to still be drinking beautifully at age 20. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
