About The Wine

High upon the iconic Hill of Corton, where the earth rises to meet the Burgundian sky, lies the birthplace of a true legend. This is not just a vineyard; it is a living monument to over a millennium of prestige, tracing its lineage back to the Emperor Charlemagne himself. Legend has it that in the eighth century, the Emperor owned the white-soiled vineyards on this specific hillside. Frustrated by the red wine stains on his long, white beard, his empress urged him to plant white grapes instead. The Emperor complied, ordering the hillsides to be planted with Chardonnay. Today, Comte de Chapelle honors this imperial heritage, standing as a custodian of centuries-old tradition. The name itself pays homage to the ancient religious orders and noble estates that meticulously tended these vines through history, preserving a winemaking savoir-faire that has vanished elsewhere in the world.

The estate of Comte de Chapelle stands proudly on the steep, high-altitude brow of the hill, facing south-southwest to catch the perfect configuration of sunlight. Here, the vines dig deep into the distinct Corton limestone and light-colored marl soils. It is a grueling terrain for the roots, but it yields an unmatched nobility that cannot be replicated. Deep beneath the stone foundations of the property lie the vaulted cellars where time slows down, and history is allowed to breathe. To possess a parcel of this land is to hold a lease on a piece of history. Comte de Chapelle Corton-Charlemagne is crafted for the collector, the historian, and the epicurean. It is an invitation to step back in time and experience the same majestic slopes that captured the imagination of an Emperor twelve centuries ago. This is more than a Grand Cru; it is Burgundy’s crowning glory, preserved for the modern connoisseur.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

After the blend was made, some wine was returned with some lees to an older barrel (third fill) and was kept back for bottling in May 2024. A pale fresh lemon. Slightly more tension on the nose. This comes across as more classic Corton-Charlemagne in all departments, much more mineral across the palate, citrus apple and stones at the finish, with excellent length. ~95 Jasper Morris

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from the Pernand side of the hill and is matured in 40% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet with well-integrated new wood, allowing the terroir to come through. Hints of wild peaches and yellow flowers. The well-balanced palate has good weight and a slightly honeyed texture, harmonious with good length and a little creaminess towards the finish. Good potential. Like the 2021, there will be two cuvées of this, one released after one winter in barrel and the other after two winters. (NM) ~93 VM
