About The Wine

A Modern Icon with a Century-Old Soul

Chateau L'If is a captivating, low-profile jewel of Bordeaux’s Right Bank that seamlessly blends family legacy, poetic reinvention, and a deliberate nod to one of the most famous names in the wine world.

The modern narrative of L'If began in 2010 when it was acquired by Jacques Thienpont, the visionary famously known for owning the legendary Pomerol estate, Le Pin. However, this purchase was more than a business expansion—it was a deeply personal homecoming. In 1921, Jacques' grandfather purchased the neighboring Chateau Troplong-Mondot, but was forced to sell it during the Great Depression. Jacques spent his childhood playing in these very vineyards, and decades later, he seized the opportunity to reclaim a piece of his family’s heritage. Today, the day-to-day operations and meticulous winemaking are driven by his cousin, Cyrille Thienpont.

The estate's identity is a beautiful play on words and family legacy. The name L'If translates to "The Yew Tree" in French, chosen as a direct, poetic homage to its Pomerol sibling, Le Pin ("The Pine Tree"), and inspired by a majestic yew tree growing on the Saint-Émilion property. Furthermore, in a region famous for rigid classification updates, the Thienpont family choices not to apply for official Grand Cru Classé status. They operate on the philosophy that the sheer quality, harmony, and pedigree of the wine should speak for itself without needing a marketing label.

The estate is nestled on the legendary limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, just east of the historic medieval village. The vineyard spans roughly 8 hectares on the path down from Troplong-Mondot, heading toward Chateau Barde-Haut. Divided into 14 separate parcels, the terroir is a textbook representation of the region’s finest attributes, featuring a perfect mix of chalky limestone and clay soils. This unique soil profile provides the vines with excellent natural drainage, infusing the wine with remarkable structure, velvety tannins, and a signature mineral freshness.

Focusing heavily on Right Bank traditions, L'If is typically crafted from a blend of roughly 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. With an incredibly small annual production of only about 10,000 bottles, L'If has quickly become a highly coveted, boutique allocation prized by collectors for its aromatic finesse, pure fruit expression, and precise elegance.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A curious wine that offers lots of fruit character on the nose, beginning with blackberries and flowers that move to integrated tannins, proceeding to a firmness and a well-framed palate. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. This needs four or five years but is lovely already. ~98 James Suckling

Flowers, wild cherries, plums, spices,, and crushed rocks show in the nose. On the palate, the wine is lively, crisp and fresh, but there is also a depth of flavor. The berries are ripe, sweet, and energetic. But with the 2022, you can really feel the influence of the limestone. The wine is upbeat, and vibrant, with an elegant textures and a spicy tone to the finish. This remains one of the new stars of St. Emilion, and is a wine to follow before prices jump. The wine blends 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc, 14.3% ABV, pH 3.51. The harvest took place September 14 - September 26. Drink from 2027-2055 96-98 Pts. ~98 The Wine Cellar Insider

A blend of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 L'If shows considerable potential, and if it evolves as well as I suspect it will during élevage, it may make my score seem conservative. Offering up aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with loamy soil, black truffles and sweet forest floor, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with velvety tannins and a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a long, saline finish. ~94 Robert Parker

Shows enticing freshness, with boysenberry and blackberry confiture flavors and aromas laced with violet and iris hints and caressed by anise and black tea on the alluring finish. A subtle, chalky minerality deftly underpins the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2036. 830 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator
