About The Wine

Birthed as a project between Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA (owners of Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro S.A. in 1997 with a view to creating an exceptional Franco-Chilean wine called Almaviva.

The name comes from Count Almaviva who is the hero of The Marriage of Figaro, the famous play by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later turned into an opera by the genius of Mozart. The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile’s ancestral history, with three reproductions of a stylized design, which symbolizes the vision of the earth and the cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. The design appears on the "kultrun", a ritual drum used by the Mapuche.

Almaviva was the first wine in Chile created under this French Chateau concept, taking into account exceptional terroir, one unique bodega, and one technical team – the three of which are dedicated exclusively to the production of one wine of unparalleled quality and excellence. Its excellence persists as one of the great wines of Chile.

Epu is the estate's second wine, drawing on the same Puente Alto vineyards and winemaking team as the grand vin.

The 2022 vintage in Maipo Valley was exceptional — generous, structured, expressive. Epu earned a 95-point lead score from James Suckling and 92+ from three other major critics. Drinking beautifully now with a 30-minute decant; cellaring will continue rewarding for the next 7–10 years.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Refined sweet tobacco, black olives and hints of paprika, cedar, iron and anchovy-like savoriness. Refined sweet berries on the palate with a lovely savoriness. Medium-bodied and restrained, plush and generous, with fine tannins and a lengthy finish. 84% cabernet sauvignon, 10% carmenere, 3% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drink or hold. ~95 JS

The 2022 Epu leads with a poised yet charmingly rustic nose of ripe red fruits flanked by herbaceous, leathery accents. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, with an opulent, forward richness that transitions to a decedent, chocolate-tinged finish of rich tannins and a lingering herbal, menthol-laced conclusion. A well-made balance between style and place, this serves as a pleasurable and accessible introduction to the more poised, nuanced Almaviva. It's a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carménère, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 12 months in 10% new French oak. ~93 Wine Advocate

~93 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

A rich and opulent style that drips with ripe berries, plum and cassis, with twinges of leather, fresh herbs and graphite dancing in and out. The plush finish lingers, offering spiced chocolate notes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 5,000 cases made, 200 cases imported. ~92 Wine Spectator
