About The Wine

Au Sommet — 'at the top' in French — sits at 2,100 feet on the wild slopes of Atlas Peak, where nine acres of volcanic mountain soil produce one of Napa's quietest, most serious Cabernet projects. Founded in 2008 by John Schwartz in partnership with winemaker Heidi Barrett, this 44-acre estate has built a reputation for restraint and precision, the kind of wine that speaks to collectors who've moved past the need for hype.

The 2023 vintage will go down as one of the best of the 21st century — a winemaker's dream. Higher-than-average rainfall pushed the vines deeper into Atlas Peak's volcanic soils, and a mild, consistent growing season delivered fruit with extraordinary structure and purity. Barrett crafted the 2023 from 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, all estate-grown.

Deep garnet-purple in the glass, this is a wine that demands patience. Swirl and wait: black-currant jelly, boysenberry preserves, wild blueberries, then hints of dark chocolate, licorice, lilacs, and fertile loam. The palate is concentrated and taut, muscular black fruit supported by firm, grainy tannins and great tension. Lisa Perrotti-Brown M.W. scored it 98 points, calling out its 'very long and earthy' finish. Antonio Galloni gave it 96, describing it as 'exquisite, nuanced... superb.' Jim Gordon awarded 96, noting its 'nervy, firm structure and great acidity.'

This is a cellar wine, not a crowd-pleaser. It'll reward a decade or more of patience, and it's made by one of Napa's most respected hands, from one of its highest, most unforgiving sites. The kind of bottle that justifies itself.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Sommet is made from 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a lot of swirling and coaxing to bring out classic notes of black-currant jelly, boysenberry preserves, and wild blueberries, leading to hints of dark chocolate, licorice, lilacs, and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and taut with muscular black-fruit layers, supported by very firm, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing very long and earthy. ~98 Lisa Perrotti-Brown M.W., The Wine Palate

So charming and elegant, especially for a Napa Valley cabernet, with a nervy, firm structure and great acidity framing fresh red fruits and savory notes, as well as earth and toast nuances. Fine-grained tannins around fresh cherry, cranberry, sour-cherry, black-olive and blackcurrant flavors. Drinkable now and best from 2030. ~96 Jim Gordon, Executive Editor, James Suckling

The 2023 Au Sommet is fabulous. It's bright and aromatic, with lovely undertones of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and sweet spice. Floral and mineral shadings build into a long finish shaped by filigreed tannins. It's an exquisite, nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Superb. ~96 Vinous

Au Sommet's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up cherries, cherries and more cherries. Yes, there's some vanilla, too. It may be a bit too simple now, but while its approachability makes it tempting, try to hold off for five or more years. This medium- to full-bodied wine is framed by silky tannins, shows ample concentration and should be delicious down the road. This Heidi Barrett-made wine from high on Atlas Peak is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Blackberries, dark plums, cedar, dried herbs, stones and forest floor on the nose follow through to a full body with plush tannins and texture. It's rich yet balanced with a fresh array of blackberries at the center an a constant frame of spices bringing vitality and giving lift to a juicy fruit on the palate. Well crafted and harmonious with a precise, long finish. ~95 James Suckling
