Coup de Foudre's 'Lightning Bolt' is a six-barrel selection from Atlas Peak, the most dramatic of Napa's mountain appellations—1,600 feet above the valley floor, where the soils are volcanic, the exposure relentless, and the Cabernet comes off the vine with a structure that makes flatland fruit feel soft by comparison. The producer pulled additional fruit from upper-valley Calistoga, blending the power of elevation with the density of Napa's northern heat pocket.

The 2023 vintage is already being called the greatest of this century—a throwback to 1974, the kind of season that happens once in a generation. Out of 411 Napa Cabernets rated, only 36 scored 95 or above. This wine is one of them, pulling a 97 from Lisa Perrotti-Brown, a 95 from Antonio Galloni, a 94 from Joe Czerwinski, and a 96 from James Suckling. That's not hype—that's four critics independently calling the same shot.

The wine unfolds into layers of rich dark berry preserve, fine tobacco leaf, lavender, crushed rock, and dried mint. The palate is full-bodied and straight-laced, with savory black fruit, firm grainy tannins, and the kind of acidity that gives the wine lift and a decade-plus of runway. Perrotti-Brown called it "full of gravitas." Galloni called it "mid-weight yet voluptuous." Czerwinski noted it's muscular, concentrated, and still a bit chewy—give it a few years.

This is mountain Cabernet built for the cellar, priced like you're buying it direct—which you are. Pull the cork in 2028 and it'll still be hitting its stride a decade later.
