About The Wine

If you want to understand great Nebbiolo without remortgaging the house for a top Barolo, Barbaresco is where smart drinkers start — and Prunotto is one of the names I'd hand a first-timer without a second thought.

Here's the quick version: Barbaresco and Barolo are made from the same grape, in neighboring villages, by many of the same families. Barbaresco tends to be a touch softer and more perfumed, and it comes around a few years earlier. Same pedigree, less waiting, usually less money. If you know your Napa Cab from your Bordeaux, think of it as the more elegant, food-friendly cousin to a structured Left Bank red.

Prunotto has been a benchmark Langhe producer since the 1920s, and since 1989 it's been in the hands of Antinori — one of the oldest wine families in the world, going back to 1385. That matters here because Antinori didn't buy Prunotto to reinvent it; they bought it to keep doing the classic thing properly. This is the estate's flagship Barbaresco, built from fruit in Treiso and Neive, two of the appellation's best villages, then aged about a year in large oak so the wood supports the wine instead of covering it.

The 2023 is a more delicate, perfumed vintage than the bigger years — garnet rather than inky, lifted on the nose, velvety on the palate, with the bright acid line that makes Nebbiolo such a natural at the dinner table. It's drinking beautifully now if you give it an hour in a decanter, and it has the structure to hold for a decade if you'd rather wait.

100% Nebbiolo.

Intense garnet in the glass. The nose is layered — wild berries, sweet tobacco, licorice, black pepper, aromatic herbs and a balsamic edge.

The palate is velvety and harmonious, with bright acidity, fine tannins and a long, persistent finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A subtle wine with red-cherry and red-currant aromas, enhanced by camphor and a fresh floral bouquet. The supple, medium-bodied palate shows crisp acidity and lightly framed tannins, with grip in the finish. Drink or hold. ~ 92 James Suckling

Pouring a pale ruby color, the 2023 Barbaresco comes from vineyards in Barbaresco and Treiso, including fruit from Monteribaldi. It opens with a lifted and expressive bouquet of ripe strawberries, mixed berries, purple flowers, and dusty earth, with subtle darker undertones. Medium-bodied, it shows vibrant acidity, salinity, and bright fruit with wonderful length and energy. Destemmed and fermented in stainless steel and aged in large barrels, it’s already very appealing now but should age nicely as well. Drink 2026-2038. ~ 92 Jeb Dunnuck

Just outside the town of Barbaresco, the amphitheatre of Secondine slopes toward the Tanaro river. It is a sunlit, well-protected spot with loamy soil capable of producing wines with notable might, however, Prunotto’s interpretation highlights its elegant side – particularly in 2023. Discreet scents of candied orange peel and cinnamon flit, before opening to pure rose. Slender in build, the palate is bright and tangy, boasting a liveliness of fresh-picked red berries. Supple tannins dissolve graciously. Very pretty but just a bit timid overall. ~ 90 Decanter
