About the Winery
Father and daughter Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown realized their dream of finding a place to express their passion for wine in 2000, when they established Calcareous Vineyards on one of the highest limestone plateaus on Paso Robles’ westside. Both Lloyd and Dana, experienced wine distributors in their native Iowa, recognized the westside of Paso Robles had potential to produce world class wines. Their acquisition of 442 acres atop solid calcareous rock reaching 1,800 feet above sea level confirmed their dedication to producing the highest quality, terroir driven wines possible. It is a labor of love to cultivate fruit on this challenging land, but the reward is immediately apparent when tasting the wines.

A classic new age approach aiming for an approachable young wine with jam and oak, particularly the latter. Drank over two days during the work week with supper, saving older vintages for the weekend. 88.
The ABV on this wine is kinda high and you can smell it in the glass which detracts from the bouquet. That said, the oak on the bouquet pierces right through and you get spices and then bit of dark fruit at the base of it, perhaps blackcurrant. There's a bit of sediment in the bottle so be careful when you pour, if you don't have a filter just twist the bottle as you pour. On the palate it's dry, the astringent are mild for a Cabernet, it doesn't feel like I'm licking wood, and it has a big finish.
They say chocolate, oak blue berries and the ocean breeze, but reality it's just a great wine.
Young blackberry fruit mixed with light green tannins and a mild confusion of a little chalky dust, eucalyptus scent and bacon after taste. As crazy as it sounds, it works well and tastes great....!
We only trade in fine wine. This is our expertise and passion. We're highly selective. Of 4,500 wines we taste each year, only 4% will make the grade.
