From the heralded Tenuta San Guido, Le Difese is the 3rd label from this Italian Superstar. Known for producing one of the best Super Tuscans on the market, Sassicaia ($300 SRP) Tenuta San Guido maintains the same care and attention in all of the wines produced at this historic estate. You don't have $200+ a bottle for an outstanding Super Tuscan. Try the Le Difese and you'll feel the magic of enchanting green hills of one of Italy's most beloved regions!

Mario Incisa della Rocchetta started a home wine project in 1948. In the 1970's Mario's son, Nicolo, and his nephew, Piero Antinori, started to commercialize the wine. In 1978, Decanter held a wine competition of great clarets of the world, and Sassicaia took first place. A star was born and the image of Bolgheri as an important producer of Bordeaux varietals in western Tuscany was confirmed. The name Sassicaia comes from "Sasso" which means "rocky field". In 2013, Sassicaia was awarded its own DOC. It is the only single, private estate in Italy to have such a prestigious designation.

The grapes are carefully hand-selected then destemmed and gently pressed. Temperature-controlled fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats. The juice undergoes a 12-18 day maceration, with subsequent pump-overs and deléstage to soften and refine the tannins. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in steel and finishes in mid-November.

Aging: 8 Months in French Barrique

Tasting Notes: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Sangiovese.

Reviews

Made with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Sangiovese, this has enticing aromas of cassis, black tea, violet, and wild herbs. Savory and elegantly structured, the medium-bodied palate shows ripe blackberry, star anise, and a hint of coffee bean framed in lithe, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink through 2025. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

Smooth and composed in the glass highlighting traces of small berried red fruits such as currants, raspberries, pressed blueberries, and wild myrtle. A lot of white almonds dominate the secondary scene blending with hints of linden and green olives. Medium-bodied, slightly rustic tannins but well-matured and integrated and a juicy, shining finale. Beautiful now but will be better from 2022. ~92 WinesCritic.com

Bright ruby red with a sparkling core. A hint of reduction on the nose, opening with air on cherries, cinnamon sticks, wild strawberries, and bright spice notes. Clear and juicy on the palate, shows good drinking flow, and robust, salty tannins underline the finale. ~90 Falstaff
