About the Wine

Rivesaltes is one of the great sweet wines of the world. Produced in the Languedoc Roussillon region of SW France, these wines live for decades since they are fortified. They can be produced from both white and red grapes, although Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Muscat, Macabeu, and Malvasia prevail in the region. The wines are sweetened only with the natural grape sugars present at harvest. For this reason they are called Vin Doux Naturel.

These special wines make fantastic birth year gifts. Imagine drinking a wine born in the same year as you! But, they are also a perfect way to travel in time. These wines are like time capsules from another era. If you listen and taste carefully, these wines often have amazing stories to tell.

Inquire about other birth year wines; we have additional vintages available.

Blend: Mostly Grenache Noir

17 Jancis Robinson

Bottled in 2011 and probably consisting of at least 50% white grapes, this has a pale honeyed color. It has a light oxidative nose with smoked walnut and lanolin. It is not quite as clear as I would have liked, but it shows good intensity and the aromatics grow on you. The palate has a slight viscosity on the entry with stem ginger, saline, a touch of cough candy and a pleasing dried quince and lemongrass nose that is light but nicely defined. I find more pleasure on the nose than in the mouth, but it would serve as a fine aperitif. Tasted December 2012. ~89WA
