About the Wine

Conteisa refers to a "quarrel" in Piemontese dialect, referring to the Cerequio vineyard area that was claimed by both La Morra and Barolo communes. The Nebbiolo master makes three Baroli. Gaia Gaja considers 2014 one of the finest vintages EVER.  2014 was an outstanding vintage (95+ rated by VM). With decanting, this wine is already enjoyable, but the patient collector will enjoy the wine in 2022 and for up to 25 years. If you can find it, this wine regularly trades at over $300 and invariably gains in price as the supply dwindles. 

About the Winery

The Gaja family landed in Piemonte from Spain in the 17th century. Following WWII, Giovanni Gaja acquired large vineyard holdings in the area. His son, Angelo, is considered one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in Italy. After studying wine in Montpellier, he was one of the first to bring French techniques such as barrique barrel ageing, malolactic fermentation, and modern technical innovations. Yet, he continued to implement extended macerations following fermentation. By raising the level and recognition of Nebbiolo, Angelo Gaja has been commended by every major wine publication in the world and acknowledged as an innovator. Today, his two daughters Gaia and Rossana manage the extensive land holdings and global distribution of this important brand.

Gaja's 2014 Barolo Conteisa is a jewel of a wine. Translucent, energetic and vibrant, it offers striking precision, with lovely salinity and bright acids that lift the red berry flavors. Conteisa is always a wine that leans toward the more delicate side of things. In 2014, all of those signatures are brought out by the personality of the year. This is one of the best recent Conteisas I can remember tasting, as well as a wine that feels natural and unforced. ~96pts, VM

The 2013 Barolo Conteisa is now officially a DOCG wine following years as a Langhe Nebbiolo or IGT wine. The first vintage was 1996 and fruit is sourced from the Cerequio cru in La Morra. This is a classic and coherent expression that is characterized by crunchy fruit flavors and sweet tannins. Fruit came into the winery at very low temperatures and saw slow fermentations. Generally speaking, the 2013 vintage is characterized by slow ripening and a long growing season (unlike 2012 that saw more concentrated heat). This is a balanced and homogenous wine with a softly caressing nature. It offers aromas of citrus, summer fruit and even a touch of watermelon pulp. This wine is usually considered the more immediate of Gaja's two new Barolo wines, yet this vintage surely needs extra time to evolve.~ 95pts, WA

 

Star anise, pressed rose petal, aromatic herb and camphor are just some of the aromas you'll find on this taut, polished red. The firmly structured, elegant palate delivers sour cherry, pomegranate, licorice and ground clove set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins. It's young but balanced, with bright acidity.
