Meriori is located in Buttrio, a beautiful wine region in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It was founded in 1920 and has been owned by a single family ever since. The founder, Domenico Meroi, also owned a restaurant or “trattoria” that is still in operation today. The story becomes even more interesting when we discover that the wines from the trattoria (produced by their own estate) were protected and hidden from the German soldiers of the Second World War, who occupied both of their properties and forced Dominico to provide them with all types of food. Domenico knew what a great product he had and did not hesitate to hide the best of his wines behind a false wall!
Colli Orientali del Friuli is possibly the most recognized “Denominazione di Origine Controllata” in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and home to some of the most prestigious wines in the area. Both, white and red varieties grow happy here thanks to the great climate that this region has, combined with soils composed of arsenic and marl, known as: “Cormòns flysch”, resulting in a terroir that produces elegant and velvety wines.
And not everything is wine in Colli Orientali del Friuli, it is also a region with great culture, art, history, and natural landscapes. Region loved by tourists from all over the world, where they can enter the medieval times when visiting castle ruins and religious monuments, touring the spectacular mountains that border Austria, and immersing in the wine culture by visiting the beautiful vineyards that occupy almost 5,000 acres of extension, known as “Vine and Wine Park”. This region becomes a complete paradise for travelers!
Paolo, Domenico Meroi's great-grandson and current owner, has achieved positive growth in this estate, from the vineyard to the winery. Meroi has almost 50 acres of vineyard in production, where the vines are grown and treated organically, without using pesticides or herbicides.
2013 Meroi Vigna Dominin Merlot Colli Orientali del Friuli is produced from 50-year-old vines and it is aged for 24 months in 100% new oak barrels.
Tasting notes: Aromas of red fruit, like strawberries cover the nose, subtle notes of dried fruit. The palate is full-bodied with vibrant and powerful tannins. Pair this wine with lamb, beef, or game.
The 2013 Vigna Dominin Merlot is a total beauty from Meroi in this vintage. Vigna Dominin is situated at 140 meters above sea level with a southeast exposure and is composed of 50-year-old vines planted to Eocenic Marl soils. This results in a simply gorgeous Merlot with incredible freshness and complexity. The aromatics are striking, revealing ripe blackberries, cherries, fresh florals, licorice, and hints of leather and toast. It possesses a full body with remarkable structure and tension, driven by a bright core of acidity and minerality which keeps it fresh and inviting through the long, expansive finish. While this is already showing exceptionally well, however, expect it to continue to age gracefully over the next decade and beyond. (Best 2018-2030) ~95 International Wine Report
