It’s three years old, and needs more time, but is drinking fine right now. This is a deep, thoughtful Pinot Noir with dark cherry and blackberry notes along with some savory gooseberries. The tannins are still a bit ornery but the fruit comes through nicely on the palate with, of course, perfect acidity. It’s not a bad price for a wine made from a small plot of land. ~94 VinePair (v. 2016)

About the Wine
A beautiful silky Pinot Noir from the unique Premier Cru in the Cote de Beaune. This wine has a lovely rose-colored hue with wild red flowers, red berries, red plum, and cherry on the nose. The wine is elegant and alive on the palate echoing the wild red flavors from the nose with more red raspberry and sweet cherry and a touch of mushroom, sois bois, beet, and exotic spices in the background. The Blagny La Pièce sous le Bois Premier Cru, just like its neighbor Meursault-Blagny Premier Cru Blanc, is strongly distinguished by its limestone terroir. It is one of the very few appellations in the Côte de Beaune where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow happily side-by-side on the same plot!
Wines from this vineyard sell for upwards of $150+ per bottle. This tiny vineyard is so small Matrot's know-how and intimate expertise of their estate-owned vineyard make this wine an absolute steal at this price! Act now, it won't last long.
In 1914, Joseph Matrot and Marguerite Amoignon transformed Marguerite’s family home, which is today the seat of Domaine Matrot, into one of Burgundy's top estates. Over the course of generations, Domaine Matrot continued to expand with the addition of new vineyard holdings, and in 2000 began harvesting the vineyards organically. Today, sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot are in charge of the management and winemaking of the Domaine, ensuring that the family-run Domaine will be in good hands for many years to come. Observing careful cultivation and vinification techniques, Domaine Matrot wines offer purity of fruit and terroir-driven character.
Aging: 15 months maturing on lees in 20% new oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 100% Pinot Noir. The clay-limestone soil, give a rich red wine, that is robust and intense. Red fruits dominate the spicy notes that follow on the nose. It is full-bodied with rich tannins and surprises the palate with its minerality and energy.
