About the Wine

Mayacamas is one of the historic, blue chip Napa properties. Those who appreciate great wines that age majestically will not miss the opportunity to drink history.  2014 marks 125 years of winemaking on this estate. This wine is recognized among pros as being one of the finest wines in Napa Valley to age, in large part, because of the winery's insistence to keep things they way they've always been.

High on the slopes of Mount Veeder, Mayacamas Vineyards has been a source
of legendary California wine since 1889. Since the 1950’s the vinification
and élevage of Mayacamas remains remarkably consistent and the winery has
continued its commitment to employ classical techniques and tools integral
to the character of these wines. The mountain terroir at Mayacamas
ranges from 1,800 to 2,400 feet in elevation and the estate spans 475 acres,
only 50 of which are dedicated to vine.

Vibrant and textured this wine offers aromas of red raspberry, sarsaparilla and black pepper. This wine has beautiful structure – elegant tannins and length are highlighted by notes of bay laurel, all spice, and mulberry. Secondary notes of graphite, black olive and cacao hint at classic wines of the old world. The grapes are harvested early to retain bright acidity and firm tannins. For fermentation, the winery utilizes a combination of cement vat fermenters, open-top foudre and stainless steel. After approximately two weeks on skins, the wine is pressed and is ready for aging. The 2014 Cabernet aged 32 months in neutral oak – 20 months in large format foudre and 12 months in barrique. After bottling, the wine was cellared for 12 additional months before release.

The vines are between 20-30 years of age.

If you intend to drink this wine anytime before 2020, be sure to decant the wine at least two hours.

Reviews

Aromas of blackcurrant, mushroom, wet earth and bark follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a stone, berry, chili and spice aftertaste. Muscular and chunky. Very serious. Almost no new oak. This shows the Mayacamas DNA. October 2018 release. ~ 97 pts, JS

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon shows the best qualities of the year to great effect. Powerful, incisive and tannic, yet also medium-bodied in structure, the 2014 is laser-focused and exceptionally beautiful. Precision and finely sculpted, the 2014 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own, but it is incredibly vivid and poised, even at this early stage. Red fruit, wild flowers, orange peel and chalk add brightness throughout. ~96+ pts, VM
