About the Wine
"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." -Gustav Mahler. The Mazzei family has been carrying the torch since 1435 and has a history of producing award winning wine since their inception. The family's Castello di Fonterutoli Estate was one of the first to produce the best-selling Italian wine, Chainti Classico. Twenty-four generations later, through excellence and tradition, they remain one of the premier estates throughout all of Italy.
The Mazzei family has been producing superior wines with passion and unrivaled excellence for over six hundred years. The family has gone to great lengths to implement and maintain sustainability in the vineyard and the estate. The 2014 Mazzei Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva is named after Ser Lapo, author of the first official document mentioning “Chianti wine.” The grapes are hand harvested and the final cuvee spends 12 months in small 50% new French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice, fresh berries, roasted tomato and fresh herbs. The wine is well built, intense, smooth tannins, and a long finish. Pair along side pasta with game sauce, stews, grilled red meats, and mid-aged cheeses.
The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is a very good wine, especially within the context of the vintage. Not surprisingly, the 2014 is a bit youthfully austere today, but it makes up for that with fine persistence. Expressive floral and savory overtones add perfume to the dark red stone fruit flavors. Give the 2014 another 6-12 months in bottle to allow the tannins to soften further. ~91VM
A tighter Ser Lapo Chianti Classico with nut, berries and cherries. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Delicious finish. Drink now. ~91JS
