About the Wine

Rioja is a great choice for people who enjoy both structure and elegance.” ~James Suckling

Right in the heart of the Rioja Alta, you'll find Bodegas LAN, a classic of Spanish viticulture. Its name corresponds to the initials of the three provinces that make up La Rioja: Logroño, Álava, and Navarra.

Since its inception, just over 50 years ago, this winery has had a very clear goal: "Oenology begins with viticulture.” And to “Give all the protagonist to the vineyard and the art of knowing how to respect its natural cycle." That is why the 170 acres of vineyards (planted in some of the most privileged areas in La Rioja) are managed under sustainable practices, and with minimal intervention.

The Gran Reserva labeling in Rioja has stringent regulations on the amount of time that the wine spends both in barrels and in bottles prior to being released. This strict regulation gives us as consumers the opportunity to drink perfectly mature wines at their release. Bodegas LAN always overachieves these aging requirements, in place the estate opts to release the wine once it is firmly in the drinking window.

If you want to taste the power and greatness of a Rioja Gran Reserva, then the Bodegas LAN Gran Reserva Rioja is the way to go. This wine was mentioned in an article by Food & Wine Magazine, where they tell us that "Rioja Gran Reserva is one of the most underrated wines on the planet, and for the money, easily one of the best deals," calling the Bodegas LAN Gran Reserva an “amazing value” wine. Robb Report also featured this wine in its article called "Bottles That Show Rioja Is Making Some of the Best Wine for Your Money Right Now."

Tasting Notes

Blend: 90% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 2% Mazuelo.

The 2015 Viña Lanciano opens with an elegant, complex nose — red fruits in liqueur (raspberry, cherry), dark fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant), and a lifted perfume of violets.

Beneath the fruit are layered notes of clove, cinnamon, vanilla, and the distinctive mineral signature that defines every wine produced from this estate.

On the palate it's medium-bodied and juicy with plum and coffee threading through the mid-palate, framed by ripe, sweet tannins that feel polished and fully resolved at this stage of its evolution.

The wine is savory and structured without being austere, finishing long with spice and mineral tension.

Critical Reviews

A medium-bodied red with plum, coffee and hints of toasted oak. It’s juicy and savory and needs some time to soften. Try after 2021. ~ 92 James Suckling

This polished red is dense yet lively. Black cherry and currant flavors mingle with cocoa and loamy earth notes, supported by sinewy tannins and tangy acidity. Focused and fresh. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2027. 5,000 cases made, 400 cases imported. ~ 90 Wine Spectator
