About the Wine
Before Casa Ferreirinha, the Douro was known almost exclusively for Port. In 1952, that changed forever. Fernando Nicolau de Almeida set out to prove that the region could produce world-class still wines, and in doing so released the first vintage of Barca Velha, a wine that would become Portugal’s most revered red and the cornerstone of the Douro’s quality revolution.
The estate takes its name from Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the formidable matriarch behind Port House Ferreira in the late 1800s, whose legacy of rigor, independence, and vision still defines the house. Today, Casa Ferreirinha is part of Sogrape, yet remains singular in purpose, farming 520 hectares across all three Douro subregions. Its most important wines are sourced exclusively from the Douro Superior, with Quinta da Leda, near the Spanish border, serving as the estate’s flagship vineyard.
That philosophy is carried forward by Luís Sottomayor, a direct protégé of Nicolau de Almeida. His approach tempers the Douro’s natural power, favoring freshness, structure, and depth over excess. Most importantly, Sottomayor is uncompromising when it comes to Barca Velha. The wine is produced only in outstanding years, declared with conviction rather than frequency.
2015 vintage stands among those rare declarations. A dry spring, intense summer heat, and well-managed water reserves led to an early yet remarkably even growing season. Crucially, temperature variation through August and September preserved balance and elegance, allowing the grapes to reach full maturity without sacrificing energy. Sottomayor described the year as outstanding, noting his confidence in its destiny from the outset.
2015 Casa Ferreirinha Barca Velha opens with a deep ruby tone and a composed, layered aromatic profile. Notes of pepper, balsamic herbs, cedar, and tobacco box lead, followed by ripe plum, slate, and finely integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is firm and focused, carried by precise acidity and finely structured tannins. Dark fruit, spice, and savory balsamic elements unfold with restraint, finishing long and measured, marked by elegance rather than excess.
The blend, led by Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, with Sousão, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Roriz, captures the Douro at its most disciplined and complete. This is Barca Velha in its truest form. Profound, restrained, and built for decades of evolution. A wine not made every year, and never made to follow trends, but one that defines them.

The 2015 Barca Velha shows aromas of dark berries, warm stones, cigar box and garrigue, as well as a floral, violet-like note. The nose is vivid, but the palate is restrained, with a mysterious charm. Formidable concentration, fine-grained tannins and timid dark-fruit flavors. There is an underlying structure that should evolve nicely over the years. It has a serious profile. Fragrant and structured with an elegant element. Better in five years. ~ 97 James Suckling
I hate the comparison of Barca Velha with Vega Sicilia because they don't have much in common other than being historical wines in Portugal and Spain, respectively. But I must say that the 2015 Barca Velha makes me think of a modern Vega Sicilia because of the nose, which is spicy and smoky, with ripe berry fruit, notes of graphite, herbs, flowers and spices. Well, and they are both wines from the Douro/Duero River... This was produced with a blend of grapes from Quinta da Leda and other higher-altitude places in the Douro Superior and is composed of 43% Touriga Francesa, 40% Touriga Nacional, 10% Sousão, 5% Tinto Cão and 2% Tinta Roriz. 2015 was a balanced year, not cold(-ish) like 2008 and not as warm as 2011, which changes the blend between higher- and lower-altitude vineyards. It matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, close to 75% of them new. The palate is a little lighter than I expected, only medium-bodied, with abundant tannins and a dry finish. 16,672 bottles produced. It was bottled in 2017 and kept in bottle for seven years. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A full-bodied red driven by both power and elegance, featuring dried blackberry, cassis, iron and bay leaf notes encased in well-sculpted tannins, this is nicely balanced, with details of leather, licorice and coffee defining the long finish. Decant. Drink now through 2027. 1,500 cases made. ~ 94 Decanter
