About the Wine
With over 35 years of winemaking brilliance, John Duval is one of Australia's most celebrated legends. In 2010, wine critic Robert Parker hailed him as an "Australian Wine Legend," a title that speaks to his unmatched influence on the world of wine.
The Duval name has a deep, rich history in Australian winemaking, with family vineyards in South Australia supplying grapes to the country’s finest producers for over a century. Today, John Duval Wines carries this proud legacy, rooted in vineyards that date back to the second half of the 19th century. With more than five generations of winemaking expertise, Duval’s visionary approach transformed his family's grape-growing tradition into one of the most renowned labels in the industry.
After studying at the University of Adelaide in 1973, Duval’s journey began at the iconic Penfolds winery. By 1986, he became the third winemaker in Penfolds' history, apprenticing under legends Don Ditter and Max Schubert, the masterminds behind the world-famous "Grange." Duval played a pivotal role in elevating Penfolds to international acclaim. During his 29 years there, he received accolades like UK Wine & Spirit’s International Winemaker of the Year, Red Winemaker of the Year (twice), and Wine Spectator's coveted Wine of the Year award.
In 2003, Duval ventured into creating his own label, and the world was introduced to Plexus—a stunning blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. The following year, he launched Entity, a Shiraz that captures the essence of the Barossa Valley’s old vines, sourced from legendary sub-regions like Stockwell, Light Pass, Krondorf, and Marananga.
John Duval Entity Shiraz is a tribute to the land, the climate, and the vine. It’s a wine that blends lush fruitiness with undeniable elegance, capturing the soul of Australia’s most iconic grape—Syrah. With every sip, you’ll fall in love with the expressive, age-worthy flavors that make Duval’s wines legendary.
Not just an Australian rockstar, Duval’s influence extends globally. He’s also a consulting winemaker at Viña Ventisquero in Chile’s Apalta Valley and a partner at Longshadows in Washington State.
Tasting Notes
100% Shiraz. Intense aromas of dark berries, plum, and boysenberry, hints of anise and clove. Excellent concentration of layered rich dark fruits, hints of dark chocolate, and earth. Firm tannins and long finish. Pair this wine with semi-hard cheeses and red-grilled meats.
Critical Reviews
Reflects - in the best sense - John Duval's long career as the chief architect of Grange. This brings together depth, texture and complexity to a palette of black fruits, ripe tannins and oak. It cries out for patience (as does Grange), and the greater your patience, the greater the reward. ~96 James Halliday
The nose is all blackberry and dark plums with background cola, earth and baking spices. The palate has density with the right hand of balance to guide it in. Drinking well, now to 2025+. Screw cap. ~93 Wine Spectator
As chief winemaker at Penfolds for 16 years, John Duval was powerfully networked at the center of the Barossa wine community. He established his own label in 2003, focused on Barossa, where he sources fruit from parcels in Krondorf, Eden Valley, Light Pass and Ebenezer to make Entity. His 2015 is a silky shiraz emphasizing tannins with the cool feel of freshly turned earth. It melds floral notes with scents of black olive, black pepper and a bright berry rasp of fruit that speaks of old-vine concentration. Finely integrated, this is built to last. ~93 Wine & Spirits
From one of Barossa's Shiraz masters, this is an earthy, herbaceous and almost delicate rendition of the grape that is known for richness and power. This wine's focus is on red forrest berries, plums, black pepper and dried leaves. The herbaceousness really shines on the palate, which, thanks to lifted acidity and fine, savory, structured tannins, makes this more than drinkable now, though it's capable of aging nicely over the next decade, too. Drink now–2028. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Entity opens with crushed black currant and black cherry notes over layers of licorice, chocolate box, Sichuan pepper and fertile loam. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers beautifully soft, silky tannins and just enough freshness to lift the intense pepper and black fruit flavors, finishing long with an herbal lift coming through. ~92 Wine Advocte
A whiff of fresh mint adds to the black cherry, blackberry and blueberry core. Effusive and concentrated, with notes of chocolate, espresso and sarsaparilla lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2029. 2,400 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator
