About the Wine
From the rolling plains and gentle slopes of Alentejo, where the sun shines over 300 days a year, comes Adega Mayor Reserva do Comendador — a rich, smooth red that captures Portugal’s warmth and laid-back sophistication.
This southern region is the country’s heartbeat for red wine. The hot days and cool nights help grapes ripen fully while preserving freshness, giving Alentejo wines their signature balance of ripe fruit, smooth texture, and easy charm. The granite and clay soils add depth and minerality, turning every sip into a taste of the landscape itself.
Alentejo is not uniform. It spans eight sub-regions, each with its own soil and microclimate. You’ll find everything from granite and schist to limestone and clay, giving winemakers a wide palette to craft wines with structure and complexity.
Adega Mayor is the vision of Rui Nabeiro, a beloved Portuguese entrepreneur who transformed his home region into a symbol of excellence. His winery, designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, rises from the land in perfect harmony with its surroundings.
The blend — Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional — reflects that same balance of power and grace. Alicante brings color and richness and Touriga adds floral lift and silky fruit.
Full-bodied yet refined, this wine is pure Alentejo indulgence — smooth, sun-kissed, and impossible not to enjoy.
Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
Blend of 80% Alicante Bouschet and 20% Touriga Nacional grape varieties.
On the palate, this wine is immense, with an "iron" structure, round tannins, and enveloped in the elegance of a silken cloak. A powerful wine that awakens sensations, with a long finish that invites a new and intriguing journey through the senses. This wine is delicious now with fruit, oak, and an elegance that makes it one of the most respected wines from Alentejo.
Critic Reviews
This is a serious, complex wine, full of dark tannins and rich black fruits. Now just mature, it has fine tannins that give strength and power to the wine's structure. It is impressive and ready to drink. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
