About the Wine

Behind the original concept for Barolo, there is the need to orient different shades in a single direction. In fact, the most classic producers have always avoided putting the individual expression of the vineyard ahead of the choral vision, capable of restoring an idea of coherence and integration right from the beginning. The 2016 Ceretto Barolo comes from four different climates or 'Crus': Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, La Morral, and Serralunga d'Alba.

It is on the wave of this traditional impetus, that Ceretto decided to make the two faces of the appellation - the one of the region’s western slope and the more austere one typical of the land looking east - coexist in the same glass. The decision to sketch the lineaments of an entire terroir in a single wine gives us a bold liquid, rich and virile, capable of exhibiting its character in youth and challenging its development with the right impulse.

The Ceretto winery was founded in the 1930s: Riccardo Ceretto, who did not own any vineyards, produced wine from grapes he purchased. The turning point came when his sons Bruno and Marcello joined the business, with their innovative thinking for the time: the importance of the land. Though this seems obvious today, memories of the poverty of rural life in the Langhe region - described so well by Beppe Fenoglio in his novel “La Malora” (“Ruin”) - were still fresh, and Riccardo was reluctant to invest in purchasing land.

In the 1960s, Bruno and Marcello started mapping out the land that produced the best wines, and buying the vineyards. They would never leave the region again.

Tasting Notes: 100% Nebbiolo. An exemplary Barolo with rich notes of ripe strawberry, black licorice, hints of flint, tar, wet earth, and soft notes of sweet spice. A complete joy on its own by-the-glass or when paired with a myriad of simple or rich foods. Ceretto’s Barolo is likely never to disappoint the discerning palate.

Reviews

Ceretto offers a tour de force in the 2016 vintage with four excellent single-vineyard expressions from Bricco Rocche, Bussia, Brunate, and Prapò. If you can't choose between those wines, you always have this excellent fallback. The classic 2016 Barolo offers dark intensity with great aromatic detailing. Fruit and some floral notes are followed by ferrous notes and a good amount of powdered licorice. The aromas are delicate and fragile; however, the wine deftly hides its power within the soft folds of its slender, mid-weight mouthfeel. This is a perfect go-to Barolo when you can't choose from all the excellent options in this benchmark 2016 vintage. ~95+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A red with poise and focus, offering plums and strawberries, as well as cedar and light coffee undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with lots of tannins, yet nicely masked with ripe fruit. It’s in balance and focused. Better after 2022. ~94 James Suckling
