About the Wine
Up in the northern part of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, just next door to Pomerol, and only a quick 3-minute drive (about a mile and a half) from the legendary Cheval Blanc—and just a mile from the famous Petrus—you’ll find Château Corbin. It’s one of the oldest estates in Saint-Émilion, quietly making some serious waves.
Here’s the kicker: 2016 was an absolute knockout vintage for the region. If you get the chance to grab some, don’t even think twice. It’s rare, it’s epic, and it’s almost gone.
Now, consider this: A bottle of 2016 Cheval Blanc will set you back at least $700. 2016 Petrus? Try around $4,000 a bottle. Château Corbin shares the many of the same magical features of the iconic terroir that makes those wines so special — but the price? That’s the real surprise.
Welcome to Château Corbin, one of the oldest and most storied estates in Saint-Émilion. Picture yourself strolling down a tree-lined drive, with the whispers of history surrounding you. This estate, with roots going back to the 15th century, is more than just a vineyard—it's a living piece of winemaking history, passed down through generations. Today, Château Corbin is carefully managed by Anabelle Cruse, the fourth generation of her family to oversee these cherished vines, continuing a proud legacy.
Château Corbin is where history meets modern winemaking. Legend says these lands once belonged to the Black Prince from the Hundred Years' War. Over the years, the estate has evolved, combining architectural beauty with state-of-the-art techniques, thanks to Anabelle Cruse and her husband, Sébastien Bardinet. Together, they’ve infused Château Corbin with soul, strength, and a deep respect for its exceptional terroir.
Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
98% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc.
Critical Reviews
Blended of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Corbin has quite a meaty nose with smoked meats and beef drippings over a core of black plum preserves with hints of bay leaves and garrigue. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with a great core of muscular fruit and an earthy finish. ~93+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From a 13-hectare vineyard located north and west of the village of Saint-Emilion, the 2016 Château Corbin (83% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc aged in 50% new oak) showed beautifully in all my tastings. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a beautifully pure, elegant 2016 that gives up lots of limestone character in its red currants, graphite, dried flowers, and earthy aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied effort has solid mid-palate depth, a fine, elegant texture, ample structure, and a great finish. It's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15+ years. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
Brimming with blackberries, supple tannins and lively acidity, this is an immediately attractive St.-Emilion that’s easy to enjoy with food now, but has the structure to age for some years. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
A new cellar at Annabelle Corbin's estate for the 2016 vintage allowed for greater precision in the delivery. There's a clear roundness to the cherry, loganberry and juicy cassis fruits here. The 50% new oak is present, offering charred and tarred flavours that aren't subtle but full of life. It's well constructed, supporting the fruit through the palate. A great life ahead. ~93 Decanter
The 2016 Corbin, matured in 50% new oak, has a ravishing bouquet of red plum, bergamot and touches of peppermint. The palate is medium bodied with quite firm tannin and good backbone. Not complex, but fresh and well balanced, leading to a lightly spiced finish. Perhaps the "insider’s choice" on the Right Bank? ~93 Vinous Media
Pure nose, lightly smoky and toasted with mocha, wild berries, fine spices. Good density and weight, ripe tannin, fine oak and a dense and lingering finish. ~93 Andreass Larsson, Sommelier.
