About the Wine

The SLOAN Estate is perched on the eastern hills of Rutherford across 40 spectacular acres, overlooking the Napa Valley floor. The 13 acres under vine, planted in 1997 on a mineral-rich, porous soil of fractured volcanic rock and sandy loam help craft these stunning wines. The perfect blend of white tufa soil, a cool marine influence, and generous sun exposure forms the ideal site for growing fruit of distinct quality and crafting exceptional wines that are compelling expressions of variety and sense of place.

Crafted with meticulous care from vine to bottle and exacting standards for achieving the highest quality, this uninhibitedly rich and extraordinarily pure wine is a beautiful, raw expression of our terroir – a reflection of our soils, climate, and its place of origin. The 2002 and 2007 vintages of SLOAN achieved the highest critical acclaim of “a perfect wine”.

The 2016 vintage was a fruitful one and an abundant harvest full of high-quality & near-perfect fruit! Wine Spectator & Wine Advocate gave the vintage a 98 point rating. Many of the 2016 Napa Cabernets have long been sold due to high demand. Here is an opportunity to acquire one of the last late releases from an important winery that has been improving year after year in the last five years.

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. ASTERISK Proprietary Red showcases an alternate yet elegant and compelling expression of the terroir. Charming and bold, it is made from mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Produced under the same obsessive attention to detail and unyielding standards as SLOAN, ASTERISK is juicy and sensual, offering an explosion of fruit aromas and flavors. While it holds the promise of aging potential, it is a splendidly inviting wine that is intended to satisfy the desire for instant gratification.

Reviews

Aromas of blackberries, herbs and green olives with some dried flowers. Full-bodied, yet firm and energetic with lovely intensity and flavors at the end. Smoky. Meaty, too. ~95 James Suckling

Starting with the 2016 Asterisk, which was bottled in March of 2019, it offers a medium to full-bodied, elegant yet nicely concentrated style as well as plenty of ripe plum, tobacco, sagebrush, and truffle-laced aromatics. It’s a rich, fleshy, beautifully balanced 2016 that has a touch of background oak to integrate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to evolve for 20+ year ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Asterisk is gentle, plush, and alluring, with soft contours and plenty of raciness. Succulent black cherry, plum, chocolate, leather, licorice, and menthol infuse the 2016 with striking layers of nuance. The 2016 is a very pretty wine, there is no doubt about it, but the oak is a bit prominent at this stage. My impression is that the lots that go into Sloan's second wine might not have the natural stuffing to stand up the oak, and in particular, the 32 months it spent in barrel, which gave the wine a slightly oxidative note that suggests the 2016 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. ~92 Antonio Galloni
