About the Wine

It’s impossible to discuss Chassagne-Montrachet without mentioning the name Bernard Moreau. Year to year, this celebrated producer vinifies and bottles some of the purest, most thought-provoking wines of the appellation. Employing a style of winemaking that might best be described as hands-off, Alex produces Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that are sensual, opulent, and utterly delicious.

Domaine Bernard Moreau has been making wine in Chassagne for over 2 centuries. In the 1960s Bernard inherited 9 hectares of the current landholding at the ripe age of 14. Currently, Bernard's sons, Alex and Benoit Moreau work the vineyards carrying on their family's legacy of producing exceptional wines that beautifully showcase their place of origin.

Chassagne-Montrachet and its neighbor Puligny-Montrachet are well-known for their Grand Crus and producing some of the world's greatest white wines. However, apart from these white Grand Crus, Chassagne-Montrachet also produces outstanding red wines. These wines have a good body and their structure is reminiscent of the reds from the Côte de Nuits. The red wines of this village are made in small quantities for a small collection of vineyards, and the vast majority of these wines never see American soil. With such a limited supply of these delicious wines, don't miss your opportunity to acquire your bottles from our small allocation.

Aging: 10 to 12 months aging in 35% new oak barrels

Tasting Notes:100% Pinot Noir. Intense color with a bouquet of red fruits especially raspberry and blackcurrant. In the mouth, this wine is round with a lovely balance between the fruit, acidity, and tannin. It is still a little young to be appreciated in its true glory.

Reviews

The 2017 old vine Chassagne rouge from Alex Moreau is a terrific wine in the making and will be a fine value. The bouquet is pure and nicely black fruity in personality, offering up scents of sweet dark berries, black cherries, raw cocoa, woodsmoke, pigeon, and just a touch of new oak. On the palate, the wine is pure, full-bodied, and quite suave on the attack, with a good core of fruit, fine soil signature, ripe, moderate tannins, and a long, complex, and classy finish. 2022-2050. ~91 View From the Cellar

Moreau had already bottled the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge to capture its explosive fruit, and the wine is showing very well, bursting with aromas of dried rose petals, peonies, cherries, and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, open-knit, and flavorful, with a crunchy core of fruit. ~Wine Advocate
