About The Wine

Leeuwin Estate is a family-owned producer and one of the five founding wineries of the Margaret River district of Western Australia. The winery is currently under the direction of two generations who work with a team of highly skilled winemakers to consistently produce wines ranking alongside the world’s finest. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan in the transformation of their cattle farm into Leeuwin Estate. Following its first commercial vintage in 1979, Leeuwin was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1981 “Art Series” Chardonnay. The international accolades have continued and Leeuwin now exports to 30 markets. Celebrating the combination of fine wine, food, art, and music, Leeuwin features an award-winning restaurant, cellar-door, and art gallery. The Estate is renowned for staging spectacular events and welcoming visitors from around the world.

Leeuwin Estate releases wines under the Art Series, Prelude Vineyards, and Siblings labels. The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent and age-worthy wines and is distinguished with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian Artists. Prelude Vineyards wines are made from fruit that produces the most readily expressive wines with the objective that they will drink well soon after release. The Siblings label celebrates the family lineage and the three generations now leaving their footprints on Leeuwin Estate. They all share a place amongst the great wines of Australia, receiving much international acclaim and attention. Leeuwin’s Art Series Chardonnay and Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon are included in the wine auction house, Langton’s, prestigious classification.

Leeuwin has a respected reputation and is known to be one of the most coveted producers of Australian wines. Wine Spector stated that “Leeuwin demonstrates just how great Australian fine wines can be.”

Tasting notes: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec. Dense and concentrated nose with blackcurrants, blueberries, and boysenberries. A delicate fragrant lift of violets, lavender offer beautiful symmetry and balance. Laced beneath complex spices of cumin, clove, black cardamom, and star anise, surrounded by an oceanic nuance throughout. Full of energy and vitality with elegant shape and frame, again black and blue fruits dominate the palate. There is dimension, drive, and penetration to the finish. Specifically, there are olive notes, combined with dried thyme, cedar, and quartz-like minerality that weaves through to powdery graphite tannins.

Wow. Silky smooth aromas of red berries, grey minerality (granite, graphite, etc), and breaths of oceans air whispered about. The palate is exactly as the nose promises, elegant and refined. Length of flavor is where this really kicks into gear, extending seamlessly across the palate, lingering and swirling in its profile. Beautiful, classical cabernet from a cool vintage. What a pleasure this is. ~97 Halliday Wine Companion

Brilliantly deep, brooding red/purple color. The bouquet is fresh and vibrant, with loads of cassis, violet, and blackberry varietal fruit, expertly infused with cedary oak notes. The wine is very intense and powerful, full-bodied and well structured, the cassis flavors rocketing through on the very extended finish and aftertaste. A majestic cabernet. ~97 The Real Review

From a cool year, this is perfumed and intense. With buoyant acidity, the silky, cedar-edged cassis, mulberry, blueberry, and red cherry fruit gathers impetus through the palate. Notes of sage, anise, bitter chocolate, terracotta, and gravel lend savory and textural nuance. Powdery cocoa tannins and vibrant acidity tease out the finish. Poised, but lingering, medium-bodied and elegant, it is drinking beautifully now but will go some distance. ~96 Decanter

2% of Malbec is included in this cracking Margaret River Cabernet. 22 months in total in a mix of barrels and barriques. There has never been any doubt over the stunning quality of the Art Series Chardonnay, but it has taken longer for this wine to reach its current stratospheric levels. Indeed, the Leeuwin reds are one of the big improvers in the region over recent decades. Deep purples here. Black fruits dominate with plums and mulberries. Spices, dry herbs, and some gravelly notes. A wine that is concentrated and with deceptive grip, but a wine that is still exhibiting elegance. The balance between fine acidity, silky tannins, and impressive length is knife-edge. This is a quality Margaret River Cabernet. ~95 WinePilot.com

A later vintage, which required a little courage to wait until the fruit hit that perfect ripeness. This one has emerged really well. It’s a medium-bodied and stylish cabernet. Has a leafy, floral, red berry, and slightly brick-dust character to complement. The palate is so seamlessly woven with fine, chalky tannins and integrated oak working harmoniously. Bright with a high-energy finish. ~95 The West Australian

Fresh, vibrant, and pretty red berry fruit, but with subtle depth that sets this apart from the ordinary. So long, fine, and elegant, with a silky texture. Very serious yet amazingly, drinking brilliantly now. ~95 Fine Wine Club
