About the Wine
The Sattlerhof estate is deeply rooted in tradition and has undergone a remarkable evolution over the years. It began as a rural farm surrounding the “Archduke Johann House," which stands at the heart of the estate. The family's commitment to the land led them to expand into winemaking, hospitality, and culinary excellence. Today, the Sattlerhof is a holistic farm, guesthouse, restaurant, and winery, maintaining a strong connection to nature and embracing sustainable development.
Sattlerhof is a family-owned and operated business, guided by the expertise of two brothers, Willi and Hannes Sattler. Tradition and innovation unite in their approach, ensuring the continued success of the estate. The young generation is involved in every aspect, from cuisine to winemaking.
The Sattlerhof estate is located in the Südsteiermark region, characterized by a unique mountain ridge with exceptional climatic conditions. The vineyards thrive on steep slopes, where the soil is predominantly quartz and lime, rich in minerals. The clash of the warm, humid Adriatic climate and the continental Pannonian climate creates challenging weather conditions, demanding diligent handcraft and a deep connection to the land.
The Sattlerhof estate's philosophy revolves around the Circle of Life, embracing the interconnectedness of the land, the vineyards, the animals, and the people. Their commitment to organic viticulture, composting, and the integration of grazing animals in the vineyards supports vine vitality and ensures the preservation of soil and plant health. This holistic approach translates into wines of exceptional quality and a deep sense of terroir.
Trockenbeeren Auslese is a German term that translates to "dried berries selection." It refers to a specific style of sweet wine made from individually selected, shriveled grapes. These grapes are left on the vine for an extended period, allowing them to develop high sugar concentrations and intense flavors. The resulting wine is lusciously sweet, with a harmonious balance of acidity and a rich, concentrated character. The Sattlerhofs are masters of this method, achieving wines that are deep and complex.
2017 Sattlerhof Trockenbeeren Auslese Sauvignon Blanc is a testament to the Sattlerhof estate's dedication to producing exceptional wines. Crafted from hand-selected Sauvignon Blanc grapes, it captures the essence of the Ried Kranachberg vineyard. The vineyard's unique composition of calcareous sand with light mica imparts distinctive spiciness and incomparable fruit flavors to the wine. The 2017 vintage showcases remarkable depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Light golden yellow, silver reflections. Fine dried fruit nuances, a hint of figs, underlaid with yellow tropical fruit notes. Juicy, complex, integrated sweetness, acidity rich in finesse, balanced and light-footed, a hint of tangerine confit, mineral and persistent, delicate touch of honey, precise and with great aging potential. ~98 Falstaff
After I had this wine about two and a half years ago, I opened the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Trockenbeerenauslese again to finish this report. The color is a radiant dark gold. The nose is highly refined in all its finely spicy and fruity intensity and concentration that is reminiscent of stewed stone fruits (apricots), pineapples, crushed rocks, wholemeal bread and honey intertwined with tart and refreshing dashes of lime and grapefruit juice. On the palate, this Is an enormously rich, sweet and viscous TBA from Sauvignon selected entirely in the Kranachberg grand cru. The 2017 combines richness and sweetness (250 grams of residual sugar per liter!) with elegance, finesse and freshness and is even stimulating due to its thrilling piquancy on the aftertaste. This is a beautifully made TBA that might belong to the very elite of Austria's praised noble sweet wines. 9.5% alcohol. Glass stopper. Tasted in December 2021. ~96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A splendid dessert wine, presenting a lush, unctuous profile filled with flavors of apricot glaze, butterscotch and lavender honey. Hints of candied orange peel, taffy and sage cream emerge midpalate. This has many dimensions, with layers emerging one after another, and impressive acidity keeping everything together. Astonishing balance and length. Delicious now, but this will keep developing over the next several decades. Best from 2023 through 2045. 300 cases made, 60 cases imported. ~95 Wine Spectator
Opulent honeyed nose with gooseberry, lemon candy and green papaya notes. Sweet but still lively with a lovely herbal edge. ~94 Decanter
