About the Wine
With over 35 years of winemaking brilliance, John Duval is one of Australia's most celebrated legends. In 2010, wine critic Robert Parker hailed him as an "Australian Wine Legend," a title that speaks to his unmatched influence on the world of wine.
The Duval name has a deep, rich history in Australian winemaking, with family vineyards in South Australia supplying grapes to the country’s finest producers for over a century. Today, John Duval Wines carries this proud legacy, rooted in vineyards that date back to the second half of the 19th century. With more than five generations of winemaking expertise, Duval’s visionary approach transformed his family's grape-growing tradition into one of the most renowned labels in the industry.
After studying at the University of Adelaide in 1973, Duval’s journey began at the iconic Penfolds winery. By 1986, he became the third winemaker in Penfolds' history, apprenticing under legends Don Ditter and Max Schubert, the masterminds behind the world-famous "Grange." Duval played a pivotal role in elevating Penfolds to international acclaim. During his 29 years there, he received accolades like UK Wine & Spirit’s International Winemaker of the Year, Red Winemaker of the Year (twice), and Wine Spectator's coveted Wine of the Year award.
In 2003, Duval ventured into creating his own label, and the world was introduced to Plexus—a stunning blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. The following year, he launched Entity, a Shiraz that captures the essence of the Barossa Valley’s old vines, sourced from legendary sub-regions like Stockwell, Light Pass, Krondorf, and Marananga.
John Duval Entity Shiraz is a tribute to the land, the climate, and the vine. It’s a wine that blends lush fruitiness with undeniable elegance, capturing the soul of Australia’s most iconic grape—Syrah. With every sip, you’ll fall in love with the expressive, age-worthy flavors that make Duval’s wines legendary.
Not just an Australian rockstar, Duval’s influence extends globally. He’s also a consulting winemaker at Viña Ventisquero in Chile’s Apalta Valley and a partner at Longshadows in Washington State.
Tasting Notes
100% Shiraz. Intense aromas of dark berries, plum, and boysenberry, hints of anise and clove. Excellent concentration of layered rich dark fruits, hints of dark chocolate, and earth. Firm tannins and long finish. Pair this wine with semi-hard cheeses and red-grilled meats.
Critical Reviews
Entity is always a complete, fabulous wine. Nothing out of place. Cherry picking fruit from sites off old vines across the Eden and Barossa Valleys. It is so polished, there's a sheen. Flavours of black fruits, licorice and woodsy spices all in sync. The key is beautifully shaped and plush tannins. Wonderful wine. ~97 James Halliday
This is an amalgam of 48% Barossa and 52% Eden Valley parcels, an increased inclusion of Eden Valley material in the mix, which works well in this powerful vintage. The aromas are attractively spicy and complex with blackberries, blueberries and dark raspberries, as well as a dark stony edge and some violet-like florals. Lots here. The palate has a very intense core of such vivid blackberry flavors. Supple and velvety, very long and rich, the core of concentrated fruit here is impressive. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~95 James Suckling
Hints of cedar join mint, pepper and bold berry fruit on the nose of the 2018 Entity Shiraz. Boysenberry and blueberry notes round out the medium to full-bodied palate, filling in any gaps in the plush-textured tannins and lingering on the softly dusty finish. This is a classically styled Barossa Shiraz, drinkable now and for the next decade or more. ~92 Wine Advocate
Dense dark chocolate notes give way to bright, fragrant and generous cherry and blackberry flavors, showcasing details of chai tea, black licorice and dried apricot. The intensity and toothsome tannins are appealing, as is the long, rich finish. ~92 Wine Spectator
