About the Wine

It's no surprise that Mendoza is one of the “New World's” favorite regions for some of the major wine critics and savvy wine drinkers in the world. The land of Malbec and asado won't disappoint any foodie that wants to adventure and discover amazing new wines. If that is your case, our 2018 Lagarde 'Guarda' Malbec Mendoza is for you!

Lagarde is one of the oldest wineries in the Mendoza region with Malbec vines over 100 years old. The Pescarmona family acquired Lagarde in 1969. They quickly become a trendsetter by being the first Latin American producer to plant non-traditional varieties such as Viognier and Moscato Bianco. Today the winery and estate are run by third-generation Pescarmonas, sisters Sofia and Lucila Pescarmona. Under their direction, Lagarde creates exceptional terroir character wines that reflect a strong sustainable commitment to the land and its people.

The fruit used for the 2018 Lagarde 'Guarda' Malbec Mendoza comes from Lujan de Cuyo. This place is a wine paradise located in the renowned and beloved region of Mendoza. Thanks to the distinguished terroir of Lujan de Cuyo, with soils of alluvial origin composed of sand, silt, and clay, combined with a hot and dry climate, and an altitude of more than 3300 ft, Lujan de Cuyo has become the perfect place for the Malbec to thrive; no wonder why this region is locally known as "The Land of Malbec".

Aging: 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Malbec. Aromas of ripe red fruits and jams, combined with the soft aromatic contribution of oak, chocolate vanilla, and some smoked notes. On the palate, it has good concentration and smoothness, silky tannins, typical of the Argentine Malbec. Pair this wine with roasted red meats or tomato-based pastas.

Reviews

~93 Descorchados.

Relatively complex aromas of blueberries and flowers follow through to a medium to full body, firm and silky tannins, and a flavorful finish. Fine tannins. Well delivered. ~92 James Suckling.

A Malbec from Mayor Drummond made in accordance with DOC guidelines, 100% of the wine is aged in French barrels for a year. A dense reddish-purple in the glass, it offers classic aromas: ripe fruit with wood to the fore, vanilla, and woodshop, then a second wave of ripe plum set off by notes of clove. Medium-bodied with a slightly rough texture, moderate freshness, and gentle tannins that guide the way. The aftertaste is juicy and lingering, brought out by the wood. ~91 Vinous.
