About the Wine

Mazzei's Ser Lapo Chianti Classico has been rated 94+ since 2015. 2018 is the most recent release from this historical producer. Born from Antonio Galloni's highly regarded 94-point vintage. Get yours before this small allocation disappears!

With this outstanding Chianti Classico Riserva, the Marquis Mazzei celebrate their notable ancestor Ser Lapo, author of the first official document mentioning “Chianti wine” (December 16th, 1398). Based almost entirely off of Sangiovese with just a splash of Merlot, to bolster the body, this wine is elegant now but will continue to age beautifully over the next decade.

"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." -Gustav Mahler. The Mazzei family has been carrying the torch since 1435 and has a history of producing award-winning wine since its inception. The family's Castello di Fonterutoli Estate was one of the first to produce the best-selling Italian wine, Chianti Classico. Twenty-four generations later, through excellence and tradition, they remain one of the premier estates throughout all of Italy.

The Mazzei family has been producing superior wines with passion and unrivaled excellence for over six hundred years. The family has gone to great lengths to implement and maintain sustainability in the vineyard and the estate. The grapes are hand-harvested and the final Cuvee spends 12 months in small 50% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice, fresh berries, roasted tomato, and fresh herbs. Fresh, tannic, with aromas of berries, strong structure, earthy and intense taste.Pair alongside pasta with game sauce, stews, grilled red meats, and mid-aged cheeses.

Reviews

Black cherry, bark, and earth on the nose with some dark-mushroom character. It’s full-bodied with very soft tannins and a juicy, savory finish. Wet-earth and forest-floor character comes through nicely at the finish. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is a powerful, wild wine. Crushed flowers, game, herbs, and licorice notes give the 2018 its distinctly savory, earthy personality. Brooding in feel, the 2018 will benefit from a few years in bottle. Most of this fruit comes from Mazzei's Caggio property, the site that informs the new Ipsus wine. In my view, Ser Lapo is the hidden gem in the Mazzei range, and the wine I would most like to drink, if forced to chose just one Chianti Classico in the lineup. ~92 Vinous Media
