About the Wine
This is the 2019 Bodegas Agro de Bazán Granbazán Limousin, a rare white from Spain’s prestigious Rías Baixas that flips everything you thought you knew about Albariño on its head.
From their 40-year-old vines rooted in granitic soils in Tremoedo, they pushed the grape to new heights, pioneering techniques that made the world take notice. Today, Bodegas Agro de Bazán is synonymous with serious Albariño wines that age, wines that surprise, wines that stun.
Fermented with native yeasts, the wine undergoes six months of bâtonnage in fine-grain French oak, followed by extended aging on the lees for over 36 months in a mix of barrel and stainless steel. This painstaking process builds body, texture, and longevity—transforming Albariño into something gastronomic and unforgettable.
Limited, vegan-friendly, and made with meticulous precision, it’s a wine that feels rarer than its price suggests.
Tasting Notes
A golden-green in the glass, this wine offers an aromatic symphony of ripe pear, fig, and peach, woven with notes of oregano, thyme, fennel, and a smoky hint of vanilla and white chocolate.
The palate is a masterclass in contrast: plush yet saline, mellow but electrifying, finishing long and harmoniously balanced.
Critical Reviews
Color: bright yellow; Aroma: spicy, white fruit, stone fruit, ripe fruit, lactic; Palate: oily, structured, fine bitterness. ~ 93 Guia Penin
Stacks of candied citrus peel character is nicely interwoven with toasty oak that gives this Albarino a very distinctive personality. Quite some textural complexity on the ample palate, with the acidity far less prominent than in regular Rias Baixas whites. Long, very harmonious finish. Vegan. Drink or hold. ~ 92 James Suckling
~ 92 Tim Atkin
