About the Wine
If you know Napa, you know Heitz Cellars. It's a name that has shaped the reputation of Napa Valley for over half a century. From the iconic Heitz Martha’s Vineyard to its world-class Cabernets, Heitz has always been about making wines that truly express the best of Napa’s terroir. Now, with Brendel, the latest label from the Heitz family, they are continuing that tradition while adding their own twist—a fresh, bold new chapter in Napa’s history.
Heitz Cellars isn’t just a winery; it’s a legacy. Founded by Joe and Alice Heitz in 1961, Heitz quickly became a pioneer in Napa Valley. The Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was a game-changer, putting Napa on the world map and securing Napa's place in the fine wine world. Heitz Cellars wasn’t just about making great wine—they were setting the standard for what Napa wines could be, and their influence is still felt today.
Now, with Brendel, that legacy is carried forward. Brendel takes Napa’s rich winemaking heritage and crafts something that’s fresh, approachable, and pure. The 2019 Cooper’s Reed Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect example—an expression of Napa’s heart and soul. Bold, yet elegant, with dark fruit, silky tannins, and a finish that lingers long after your last sip. It’s Napa, redefined.
Brendel is a tribute to a man whose vision shaped Napa’s wine history. The winery is named after Leon Brendel, a true pioneer in Napa winemaking. Born in 1884 in Alsace, France, Leon’s winemaking journey began long before Napa became the world-renowned region it is today. Before coming to Napa in the 1930s, Leon spent time in Mexico, where he served as the wine chemist for President Francisco I. Madero. His role at Madero Winery was legendary, as Madero Winery is the oldest winery in the Americas, founded in 1597.
When Leon moved to Napa in 1930, he became a founding winemaker at Freemark Abbey, one of Napa’s oldest and most respected wineries. By 1940, he planted his own small vineyard in St. Helena and founded his own winery—Only One—producing wines from the unique grape Grignolino, an Italian variety that was rare in Napa at the time.
In 1961, Leon sold his land to Joe and Alice Heitz, and that vineyard became the birthplace of Heitz Cellars. Joe and Alice Heitz continued the legacy Leon had started, crafting wines that honored the land while setting the standard for Napa Valley wines.
Now, Brendel is the next chapter in this incredible journey, and the wines are crafted with the same passion, integrity, and purity that Leon Brendel envisioned. Led by Brittany Sherwood, the Director of Winemaking at Heitz Cellars, Brendel wines are created with minimal intervention, allowing the land and grapes to speak for themselves. Brittany’s winemaking philosophy is simple: let the fruit shine and make wines that reflect the true essence of Napa Valley.
The 2019 Cooper’s Reed Cabernet Sauvignon is a pure expression of Napa. This wine embodies everything that Brendel and Heitz stand for: quality, authenticity, and a deep connection to Napa’s land and history.
Brendel wines are made with 100% Napa Valley fruit, organically farmed, and free from unnecessary additives. Every bottle reflects the vision of Leon Brendel and the legacy of Heitz Cellars.
2019 was a fabulous year for Napa Valley. Wine Spectator awarded this year a 97-point score, and Vinous Media gave it 96 points saying that "The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets have turned out beautifully. 2019 is a very high-quality vintage of Cabernets that will be easy to drink and enjoy with minimal cellaring. The extra kick of late heat softened the tannins, making the wines a pleasure to taste and drink."
Tasting Notes
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate echoes these vibrant flavors, finishing with smoother tannins than you’d expect from a Napa Valley Cabernet. It’s a nod to Napa’s classic style, with a refreshing, modern touch.
Critical Reviews
The 2019 Cooper's Reed Cabernet Sauvignon includes fruit from young vines and high-vigor sites in St Helena, Rutherford and Calistoga. It's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and 100% Napa Valley, not always the case for wines in this price range. It's minty, herbal and dusty, with cherries and tobacco joining in. Medium to full-bodied, it's bright, fresh and taut, with a crisp, slightly greenish edge to the long, racy finish. A lighter, more quaffable style of Cabernet Sauvignon. ~90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
