"Basking in golden sunshine, Camigliano is a beautiful estate with an ambitious winemaking program that includes a large winery and 92 hectares of vines over varying soils and microclimates. The Ghezzi family is currently preparing the ground for a new vineyard with special exposures to be planted with selected clones of Sangiovese for future production of Brunello di Montalcino." ~Wine Advocate

Camigliano produces award-winning, organic Sangiovese. But, its history is a compelling story that mirrors the feuding states of medieval Toscana and was the site of a famous battle between the Sienese and Pisans. From the Etruscan era to WWII, the land underneath these vines is truly historic and has been meticulously maintained for growth.

The symbol of Camigliano: the camel, found on a seal dating to the 13th century, can be connected to the influence of the papacy in the area, and there is speculation of connection to the movements of the Crusades that reached the Holy Land due to the castle's location on the pilgrimage routes to Rome. The property is actually a tiny hamlet 15 minutes southwest of Montalcino. The scenery is stunning and the nearest neighbor is Argiano winery (winner of #1 wine in the world by Wine Spectator in 2023).

The modern history dates from 1957 when Walter Ghezzi, a successful Milanese businessman, purchased and renovated the property. Walter's son continues the legacy of maintaining its medieval past whilst advancing the practices of this historic estate.

Aging: 24 months in oak barrels followed by 12 months in the bottle.

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. This wine is a true expression of its terroir, offering intense aromas and beautifully balanced tannins. Carefully crafted from the finest clones and sourced from the sunniest, most ideal vineyards, it's a classy bottle that will only get better with time. Organically farmed. Serve it at 64.4°F to experience its full charm. Perfect with game, beef, or aged cheeses, but honestly, it’s equally stunning on its own as a contemplative, sip-and-savor wine. It’s the kind of wine that leaves an impression long after the last drop.

Reviews

The fruit is on the darker side for the vintage, evoking black cherry, blackberry and dark plum flavors, while earth and wild herb accents add detail. Tightly knit tannins quickly intervene, leaving a compact, powdery feel on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 16,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator

Citrusy memories of pink grapefruit juice, blood oranges but also currants and wild blueberries. In the background, saltiness, aromatic herbs such as oregano, burnt rosemary and wild catmint. On the palate, full body, vivid tannins and a juicy and enveloping finish. ~93 Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com

The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino has a ruby/orange color and lifts with a citrus-tinged profile of dried orange peel, preserved cranberries, dusty earth, and sweet Mediterranean herbs. This continues to the palate with elegant structure in its fine tannins, an even spine of acidity, and notes of citrus peel and dried apricot on the finish. This is a very pretty style that will be best enjoyed over the next 10 years. 200,000 bottles produced. ~92+ Jeb Dunnuck

Lots of dried fruit, such as of figs, dried plums and savory herbs, followed by lingering dried-meat and sweet-and-sour undertones. Medium-bodied with polished tannins. A slightly nutty aftertaste. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold. ~92 James Suckling

The Camigliano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino offers a combination of dark fruit, ripe blackberry and toasted cardamom or cumin seed from 24 months of aging in large oak casks. This organic wine shows lots of rich concentration and oak-driven intensity that fits within the context of classic Brunello. Ultimately, the wine mirrors a warm growing area with a mix of clay, sand and rocky soils. It delivers easy texture on the mid-palate with chalky tannins. This is a big release of 190,000 bottles. ~92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a pretty bouquet of dried roses and strawberries complicated by Tuscan dust. This is silky-smooth and polished in feel with ripe red berries that flow across a stream of brisk acidity. Orange and cedar linger as the 2019 finishes gently tannic with a pleasantly bitter tinge. ~90 Vinous Media

Owned by the Ghezzi family since 1957, Camigliano expands over the gentle, sun-soaked slopes of Montalcino’s west. From 100 hectares of vine, this Brunello is the estate’s mainstay with an annual production of approximately 190,000 bottles. Lifted dried flowers meet leather, dusty earth and savoury mushroom. Full and soft, the palate echoes those savoury tones bringing in a cocoa twist. Tannins are enveloping but luxuriously yielding. If you are looking for immediate gratification from the 2019 vintage, this provides it. ~90 Decanter
