For more than a century, Il Poggione has been one of Brunello’s trailblazers. Long before Montalcino became a global name, the estate was investing heavily in clonal research, vineyard precision, and modern winemaking—pushing quality forward when few others were thinking that way. Il Poggione was among the first to release Brunello di Montalcino in the early 1900s, and later became a founding member of the Brunello Consortium, helping shape the region into what it is today.

What Lavinio Franceschi started is now carried on by Leopoldo and Livia, who combine old-school craft with today’s best innovations while keeping the same relentless focus on the vineyard. The estate spans 530 hectares, with 140 hectares of vines and 50 of olive trees, surrounded by grain fields, forest, and livestock—an ecosystem that reinforces their commitment to sustainable, balanced farming.

Brunello is the crown jewel of Montalcino, crafted entirely from hand-picked Sangiovese sourced from the estate’s oldest vines.

After a slow, controlled fermentation, Il Poggione ages the wine in large French oak barrels, giving it depth without overpowering the fruit. A long rest in a bottle follows—an essential step that builds the complexity, elegance, and seamless texture that have made Brunello di Montalcino one of the world’s most iconic wines.

A seductive perfume of roses washed in mulberry is mirrored on the first sip. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Another classic that is usually sold at very attractive prices. Dense bouquet with ripe red and dark fruits, blueberries, wild strawberries, cassis and redcurrants. Behind this, the wood barrel ageing is also evident with a fine animal note, cedar, tobacco, chocolate, dark spices and herbs. Fleshy, dense palate with a coarse-meshed tannin network, but of the best quality. Very persistent and full-bodied on the finish. ~ 95 Fine Wine Guide

Layered and decisive in the full and enveloping sensorial matrix, it shows notes of plums, wild violet, coriander, chopped almonds, mixed white flowers, and blood orange juice. The 2019 is a vintage of balance, somewhere between 2016, 2013 and 2010. Sant'Angelo in Colle, which suffers in warmer vintages, performed very well and Il Poggione is a great example of the harmony of the area's wines in this vintage. Fruity at first sniff, it becomes more restrained later, with black cherry, violet, leather, graphite vibrancy and its typical nutty finish. The chalky tannins are extracted but velvety, underlined by an almost zesty acidity. ~ 94 Decanter

The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows an evolved bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flower and autumnal leaf. On a second nose, you get dark licorice, wet slate, cola and grilled rosemary. The tannins are powdery and dry. I recommend a medium-term drinking window as a result. You do feel the powerful 15% alcohol content in this ample 200,000-bottle release. ~ 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Features ample plum, cherry, iron, tobacco and underbrush flavors buoyed by a plump texture to match the dense structure, plus vibrant acidity to keep it all focused. Another year of aging should allow the finish to stretch out and this wine to reach its full potential. Best from 2026 through 2042. Lots of dried fruit, such as figs and dried cherries, followed by tree bark, rosemary and a hint of sandalwood. Full-bodied, creamy palate with a solid tannin texture. Wonderful length. Dense and opulent. Better after 2029. ~ 92 James Suckling
