About the Wine

LUKE takes its name from "Wahluke" — the Wanapum people's word for "watering place" — a nod to the Native stewards of the land that is now one of Washington's most exciting wine regions.

Founded by Thomas and Kristin Vogele, Pacific Northwest natives who met at the University of Washington and brought over 30 combined years in the wine business to bear, LUKE launched its first vintage in 2012. The brand grew fast, built on a reputation for 90+ point wines that punch well above their price and a genuine commitment to the land they source from.

The Reserve tier is where LUKE gets serious. Winemaker Peter Devison arrived in Eastern Washington in 2004 for what was supposed to be a single harvest. He never left. Over 15 years, he built a reputation for a hands-on, minimal-intervention approach that lets Washington's exceptional terroir do the talking.

For the 2019 Reserve Syrah, Devison sourced exclusively from the Lawrence Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA — a Columbia Valley sub-appellation with one of the warmest, driest climates in the state. Fruit was hand-harvested in mid-September, fermented with 20% whole clusters in concrete vessels, and aged on lees in French oak until bottling in June 2021. Unfined. Unfiltered. Only 212 cases made.

Sustainability is baked into everything LUKE does — natural composting, integrated pest management, water recapture and reuse, FSC-certified label paper, and natural cork closures that generate zero waste. This is a wine made with intention, from the vineyard to the bottle.

Tasting Notes

A youthful, dark purple color. The nose charms with its dense mix of crushed dark berries, cured olive, grilled toast and black licorice.

The finish has a beautiful mineral-laced brightness and lingering notes of pomegranate and baking spices.

Critical Reviews

All the fruit for this wine comes from Lawrence Vineyard on the Royal Slope. The aromas are expressive, with notes of dried flower, herb, medicine, berry and smoked meat. The palate brings sleek Asian plum sauce and pomegranate flavors. There's a grip of structure behind it all. It's fascinating. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast
