About the Wine
This isn't just another Malbec - this is quite possibly the greatest wine to ever emerge from San Juan province, the bottle that's single-handedly putting Pedernal Valley on the global map as the next great wine destination.
The Pedernal Valley isn't just remote - it's special. Protected by natural mountain barriers and blessed with underground water fed by pure Andean snowmelt, this is where Mother Nature decided to create something truly unique. The soil? Pure flint and silica stone that actually creates sparks when you strike them together. It's dirt that's more exciting than most people's entire day. No wonder they named this wine PYROS - Greek for fire, because this place is absolutely on fire.
Not all vineyard blocks are the same, and Block No. 4 is the superstar that makes other vineyards jealous. Sitting at the highest point of Pyros' Firestone estate at an amazing 1,400 meters above sea level, these Malbec vines don't just grow - they absolutely thrive in conditions so tough that other grapes would give up. The crazy altitude and desert climate create temperature swings so wild that the grapes develop super thick, concentrated skins and take their time ripening to absolute perfection.
This isn't your typical grocery store Malbec. The 2019 Pyros Single Vineyard Block No. 4 represents the most unusual, elegant, and downright spectacular example of high-altitude Malbec you'll find anywhere in Argentina. Winemaker Paula González has crafted something that's both a love letter to the Pedernal Valley and a complete game-changer that's redefining what Argentine Malbec can achieve.
Every bottle tells the story of a place so unique it earned Argentina's first Wine Geographical Indication status in 2007. This 100% Malbec captures the essence of flint-sparked fires, Andean snowmelt, and the kind of terroir that wine lovers dream about but rarely experience. It's complex without being pretentious, elegant without losing its Argentine soul, and distinctive enough to make wine experts stop mid-conversation and declare it one of San Juan's greatest achievements. This is the wine that's proving San Juan can compete with Mendoza's finest.
The story behind Pyros reads like the ultimate wine lover's fairy tale crossed with a blockbuster adventure movie. When Mijndert Pon, the absolute mastermind who built the legendary Bodegas Salentein and Bodegas Callia empires, first set foot in the Pedernal Valley, he didn't just see potential - he saw pure, unadulterated destiny unfolding before his eyes. This was a man who had already completely conquered Argentine wine, but the Pedernal Valley represented something entirely game-changing. It was uncharted territory, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to create the region's very first wine brand and establish a completely revolutionary new chapter in Argentine viticulture that would make history.
Leading the charge is winemaker Paula González, an absolute force of nature and scientific genius who's pioneering experimental micro-vinification techniques that are literally rewriting the rulebook on high-altitude winemaking. Then there's the legendary consultant Matocq, a San Juan native whose family worked these very vineyards for generations. This isn't some imported expert - this is homegrown genius. After earning his Master of Science in Viticulture and Enology from France's prestigious Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier, Matocq brought an international perspective back to his homeland. For 20 years, he's been the go-to vineyard consultant, and when it comes to the Pedernal Valley, nobody knows the terroir better. He's published countless articles in leading wine publications worldwide and still teaches at the National University of Cuyo in Mendoza. When Pyros launched in 2011, getting Matocq on board wasn't just a coup - it was validation that this project was something truly special.
This is what happens when ancient flint meets modern winemaking genius, when extreme altitude meets passionate craftsmanship, and when a hidden valley finally gets its moment to shine and show the world what true greatness looks like. This one writes legends and sets the standard for what San Juan wine can achieve.
Aged in 1, 2 and 3-year-old French and American oak barrels, with 10% aging in stainless steel for 12 months.
Tasting Notes
100% Malbec. Notes of wildflowers, black fruits, and blueberries with nicely integrated oak. It is deep and rich, with flavors of black berries, cherries, spice, and minerals. This is a powerful but balanced wine, with firm tannins and beautiful complexity.
Critical Reviews
The 2019 Malbec Pyros Vineyard Block N°4 comes from a small parcel in the Pedernal Valley, San Juan, aged for 12 months in French oak (10% new). Dark purple in hue, the 2019 features aromas of balsamic, pepper, plum marmalade and chutney. Indulgent and velvety, the compact, juicy acidity leads to a rich and supple mouthfeel. This is a powerful red from the Andes. ~93 Vinous Media

This has notes of chocolate, spiced plums, black cherries and toffee. Salted olives, too. It’s full-bodied, with firm and fine-grained tannins. Concentrated sweet and savory elements. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling
This is a selection from plot number 4, planted in 2008 at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters, on gravel and limestone soils. 100% of the wine has been aged in barrels, although only 15% in new oak. This allows us to clearly capture the ripe fruit flavors of red fruits, which impart a slight sweetness. This ripeness, combined with the alcohol content, means that the tannins, while pricking the tongue, feel soft and round. A long-lived wine that is barely in its infancy. ~92 Descorchados
