The history of Wirra Wirra Winery dates back to 1894 when a former cricketer decided to build this winery in the distant and exotic McLaren Vale. However, his glory days began with the arrival of Greg Trott, when in 1960 he decided to buy it and rebuild it.
Greg Trott was a man who defied all standards; He had a visionary mind and was always focused on the quality of his wines, however, all his work was strongly linked to enjoying and having fun in the process, this became Wirra Wirra’s mantra: “You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun." ~Greg Trott.
The mastermind responsible for producing these fun and vibrant wines is Paul Smith, a passionate winemaker whose philosophy is to “let the fruit shine.”Paul seeks to produce wines that are alive, bright, and that express the beautiful terroir of the land.
Wirra Wirra Winery is quite a spectacle that is completely worth visiting. In 2021, they were awarded the global winner of “Best of Wine Tourism” by The Great Wine Capitals in the World. This winery is charming, with beautiful architecture that has an antique feel and will immediately transport you to a movie from medieval times. However, things are different in the vineyard and vinification cellar, the winery is modern and has state-of-the-art technology.
Wirra Wirra has an enormous focus on its vines, stating that "Great wines come from healthy vines." The vineyard has been managed in a biodynamic and sustainable way for more than 10 years, and they have been certified organically with NASAA since 2013. In addition to these favorable practices, this winery is also environmentally and socially responsible.
The fruit to produce the 2019 Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise Shiraz comes from the Scrubby Rise vineyard in the McLaren Valley. This vineyard was planted in 1972, on rocks that are over 100,000 years old. The result is simply magical: A lovely, intense, exciting, and affordable wine!
Tasting Notes: 100% Shiraz. Aromas of red berries, with bramble and violets. On the palate, full-bodied with a silky texture and spice. This wine pairs great with kebabs, bbq burgers, and grilled vegetables.
Intense and polished, with blackberry preserves, dried blueberry, and spiced plum flavors, details of dried herb, tobacco, and red licorice. Strikes a balance between a juicy thread of acidity and velvety tannins.Drink now through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 150 cases imported. ~90 Wine Spectator
