About the Wine

Few countries offer as many opportunities for discovery as Portugal, which is one of the world’s most dynamic wine regions right now. ~Wine Spectator

If you love Portuguese wines but usually reach for the reds, it’s time to meet one of the country’s best-kept secrets — Portuguese whites. This is a layered, structured, and built for the table wine. This wine carries the same sunshine and soul as Portugal’s reds, but with an elegance and freshness that surprises even seasoned wine lovers.

Alentejo is not uniform. It spans eight sub-regions, each with its own soil and microclimate in the southern part of the country. You’ll find everything from granite and schist to limestone and clay, giving winemakers a wide palette to craft wines with structure and complexity.

Adega Mayor is the vision of Rui Nabeiro, a beloved Portuguese entrepreneur who transformed his home region into a symbol of excellence. His winery, designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, rises from the land in perfect harmony with its surroundings.

Aging: New French oak barrels, followed by 6 months of aging on lees

Tasting Notes

70% Antão Vaz, 20% Viognier, and 10% Verdelho.

Developed palate of baked yellow apples, poached pears, and limestone minerality. Marcona almonds and honeysuckle, Long, dry finish. Potential for further ageing. The oak is well integrated. This is a wonderful wine to pair with cheeses and pates, African roasted chicken, and any seafood.

The white Reserva from Adega Mayor is wood aged and it feels full on the palate. It has nutmeg, citrus and apricot flavors alongside a rounded texture. Age for another two years.  ~ 90 Wine Enthusiast

What our customers say about us

Adega Mayor

Alentejo

Founded in 2007 in the heart of Portugal’s Alentejo region, Adega Mayor is the country’s first author-designed winery, brought to life by the minimalist vision of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Surrounded by 350 hectares of vineyards and olive groves, the winery blends cutting-edge design with age-old winemaking tradition. Adega Mayor produces elegant reds, crisp whites, and fresh rosés, with native grape varieties like Aragonez, Trincadeira, and Antão Vaz taking center stage. More than a place to make wine, it’s a destination where architecture, sustainability, and Alentejo’s rich terroir converge in every bottle and every visit.
