About the Wine
The 2020 Pago Florentino Vino de Pago isn't just any wine—it's part of an elite group. Only 20 estates in all of Spain have been granted the coveted Vino de Pago designation, and Pago Florentino proudly stands among them. This rare classification recognizes a single estate’s unique ability to produce wines of exceptional quality, distinguishing them from all other wines in the region.
To put it simply: Vino de Pago is the pinnacle of Spanish winemaking.
Introduced in 2003, the Vino de Pago status was designed to honor exceptional, single-estate vineyards with unique climates, soils, and conditions that enable the production of wines of exceptional quality, standing apart from any other wines in the surrounding regions. These estates are so special that they are classified as their own appellation, unlike the more common Denominación de Origen (DO) wines that group multiple vineyards. Essentially, being a Vino de Pago means that the winery’s terroir is so unique that it deserves a designation of its own.
Pago Florentino’s story begins in 1997 with Florentino Arzuaga, a visionary founder and owner who, originally drawn to the world of olive oil, ventured into Castilla-La Mancha, an area famous for its unique landscapes and terroir. Florentino’s keen eye found the perfect spot in the Montes de Toledo, an area that would later give birth to some of the most renowned wines Spain has to offer. It was here that Florentino acquired 150 hectares of land, originally planning to cultivate olive trees. But in a twist of fate, he stumbled upon the estate La Solana in Malagón, a region within Ciudad Real with an exceptional microclimate for growing vines.
Nestled in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha, one of the largest and most iconic wine regions in Spain, Pago Florentino benefits from a perfectly unique microclimate. The vineyard sits on a slope that bathes in sunlight all day long, ensuring optimal vine maturation. Here, nature works in harmony with the winemaker’s care—sunlight and soil align to deliver the perfect grapes. Every detail, from the rock-strewn soils to the impeccable weather conditions, serves to create a wine of the highest quality.
Tasting Notes
100% Cencibel (Tempranillo). Pago Florentino is a bold, expressive wine that delivers a rich tapestry of flavors. Ripe red fruit and blackberries intertwine with roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and a hint of toasted oak, creating a complex, yet smooth profile. The palate is velvety, with a silky entry and a long, memorable finish that lingers with notes of dark fruit and a touch of smokiness. It’s a wine that’s as elegant as it is powerful.
Critical Reviews
This brilliant violet-red-colored wine has a bouquet of blackberry, lavender and sage leaf. There is a soft note of violet on the palate alongside velvety tannins and flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate, clove, butterscotch and a closing hint of fennel pollen. The varietal label reads Cencibel, a synonym for Tempranillo. ~94 Wine Enthusiast
