About the Wine
Château Mukhrani is one of Georgia’s great historic estates, with roots that trace back to the royal Bagratid dynasty and a modern revival built on precision and discipline. Founded as a formal winery in the late 19th century, its wines were once poured at the Russian tsar’s court and awarded internationally, including top honors in Paris as early as 1889.
Today, Château Mukhrani controls more than 100 hectares of estate vineyards in Kartli, the historic heart of Georgian wine. All fruit is estate-grown, farmed organically, and sourced from a single, contiguous terroir shaped by fertile soils and a temperate climate that allows for slow, even ripening. Indigenous Georgian varieties sit alongside classic international grapes, all planted with strict yield control to preserve concentration and balance.
The modern chapter is led by winemaker Patrick Honnef, trained in Bordeaux under Stéphane Derenoncourt. His approach blends European structure with Georgian identity, combining traditional techniques with modern cellar precision. The goal is clarity over excess. Power without heaviness. Wines that show depth, structure, and longevity rather than sweetness or makeup.
2020 Saperavi sits at the core of the estate’s red wines. This ancient Georgian grape is naturally intense, deeply colored, and structured, capable of producing serious, age-worthy wines with rich fruit, firm tannins, and unmistakable character. In Mukhrani’s hands, it delivers wines of strength, balance, and quiet authority. Saperavi is one of the few grapes in the world that has both a red color and a red juice. The color of this wine is black as night.
Château Mukhrani’s philosophy is simple and consistent. Estate fruit only. Farming first. Structure over show. Wines built to reflect place, not trends.

Tasting Notes
100% Saperavi.
This dry red pours a deep ruby with a violet edge. The nose opens fast with ripe black fruit and wild berries. Blackberry and blackcurrant lead, followed by ripe plum and sour cherry. Notes of licorice and dried fruit add depth, with a measured touch of oak bringing hints of cocoa and vanilla. A subtle herbal note follows.
On the palate, the wine is rich, focused, and velvety. Sweet, ripe fruit stays in sync with the aromatics, balanced by fresh sour cherry acidity. Tannins are smooth and controlled. Oak remains supportive, never dominant. The finish is round and clean, marked by coffee, black pepper, and dried wood notes.
