About the Wine
Tucked away in the heart of Bolgheri, between the famous estates of Ornellaia and Sassicaia (literally less than 1 mile), Podere Orma is a charming 5.5-hectare vineyard owned by Antonio Moretti. The soil here, a mix of deep gravel and clay with just a touch of sand, ensures excellent drainage while soaking up the sun's warmth—perfect for growing Bordeaux varietals. With the Tyrrhenian Sea close by, the climate stays balanced, giving the vines just what they need to thrive.
The 2020 Orma Toscana IGT is the epitome of a modern Super Tuscan, sourced from the estate’s prized vineyards. This wine is the result of meticulous vineyard management and a commitment to showcasing the best of Tuscany’s terroir. The vineyards of Tenuta Sette Ponti, located in the heart of Tuscany, are known for their perfect balance of clay, limestone, and Galestro soils—ideal for producing wines with intensity, depth, and finesse.
The 2020 Orma is a powerful expression of the estate’s commitment to excellence. The wine undergoes aging in a mix of French oak barriques and tonneaux, which gives it structure, while retaining its vibrant fruit character. The result is a wine that is full-bodied yet incredibly balanced, with flavors of blackcurrants, cassis, tobacco, and hints of licorice. Its silky tannins provide an elegant mouthfeel, and the wine finishes long and persistent.
This is a wine for the ages, with the potential to evolve beautifully over the next 20 to 30 years. However, it’s already a pleasure to drink now, offering a rare combination of power, elegance, and finesse. The 2020 Orma is a standout Tuscan red that will impress both collectors and casual drinkers alike.
Aging: 18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux then in bottle for one year before being released.
Tasting Notes
50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet Franc, opens with intense aromas of tobacco, sage, rosemary, and vibrant redcurrants. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and polished, with a dense, solid core that will develop beautifully with time. Flavors of cassis, geraniums, and orange blossom are layered with earthy and spicy notes of liquorice and gunpowder. The wine is structured, with fleshy tannins and a long, fresh finish.
Critical Reviews
Tobacco, sage and rosemary come through nicely, together with redcurrants and cassis. Full-bodied, yet polished, with a solid and dense center-palate. Tight at the end now, but will open nicely. Needs two or three years to develop. 50% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc. Try after 2025. ~97 James Suckling
Orma 2020 is rich in passion and energy showing notes of geraniums, calendula, orange blossom, quinine, liquorice and gunshot powder. Full bodied, a harmonic, balanced structure of splendid quality and impressive stratification and a long, persistent finale that gives vertical length well blended with horizontal envelopment. Better from 2024. ~97 WinesCritic.com
Fragrant and expressive on the nose, the floral / dried herbal scents mingle on the nose putting you squarely in Tuscany. Lifted and beautiful, a sensational vibrant, lively, pure and pristine wine. So carefully delivered in terms of texture with a joyous quality to the fruit flavours and mineral aspects - a cleanness and precision. Detailed and finessed. Stunning with fleshy but well-integrated tannins and a kick all the way through to a long fresh finish. Complexity and structure, supremely balanced. A top pick and great value! Ageing 18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux then in bottle for one year before being released. ~96 Decanter
Bright ruby with a slight purple tinge. Intense nose with notes of clove, some mint, fine blackberry, slightly earthy components in the background. Spreads great on the palate, has a lot of finely meshed, hearty tannin, nice juiciness, crisp fruit and a long finish. ~96 Falstaff
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Orma 2020 Orma is richly concentrated and midnight black in appearance. It presents considerable intensity in terms of its ink-like flavors of wild plum, blackberry confit, dark spice and cured tobacco. The wine wraps heavily over the palate, imparting lots of important textural richness along the way. You are best off serving a wine of this depth and magnitude with a classic T-bone cut bistecca alla fiorentina. ~94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
