About the Wine

Every year, Philippe Melka and Michel Rolland — two of the most decorated winemaking consultants in the world — go through every barrel in the Bulgheroni cellar and pick the absolute best.

What ends up in this bottle is the result of that ruthless selection: a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc drawn from Beckstoffer To Kalon in Oakville and the estate's own vineyards alongside Beckstoffer Dr. Crane and Las Piedras in St. Helena. Only 212 cases were made. It is a wine that will never be repeated.

The Lithology estate sits at the base of Howell Mountain in St. Helena — one of Napa Valley's most storied pieces of ground.

The original stone winery on the property was once used by Bill Harlan as the founding location for Promontory and the first vintages of The Napa Valley Reserve. Alejandro Bulgheroni purchased the estate in 2014, bringing a background in engineering and a career spent studying land across the globe.

He assembled a team — Melka, Rolland, and estate winemakers Matt Sands and Mark Pittman — and set a single standard: find the best fruit in the valley, make it as pure as possible, and let it speak for itself.

The 2021 vintage is the culmination of consecutive vintages scoring 98, 99, and now 100 points. It is the wine Bulgheroni's team considers their greatest effort to date — a 30+ year Cabernet built on purity, precision, and some of Napa's most coveted terroir.

Tasting Notes

90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Deep, inky ruby in the glass with an almost staining intensity. The nose opens with pure crème de cassis, black raspberry, flowery incense, new leather, and dark chocolate — layered, complex, and arresting.

On the palate, full-bodied richness is matched by a sense of weightlessness and precision. Tannins are plush yet perfectly calibrated, framing flavors of blueberry, dark cherry, violets, tobacco, toasted bread, and graphite.

The finish is extraordinarily long, with no hard edges and remarkable purity throughout. Needs 4–5 years of cellaring to show its full potential but built for 30+ years of evolution.

Aged 22 months in 72% new French oak barrels.

Critical Reviews

A flagship best barrel selection, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Alejandro Bulgheroni checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc from a mix of Oakville and St. Helena fruit that spent 22 months in 72% new barrels. It's another inky-hued, glass-staining wine revealing incredible aromatics of pure crème de cassis, black raspberries, flowery incense, new leather, and chocolate. These all carry to a full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, utterly heavenly 2021 that has ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, incredible purity, and a great, great finish. It needs 4–5 years to show its full potential but will be a 30+ year wine. ~ 100 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Alejandro Bulgheroni is a blend of the best barrels in the cellar. In this vintage, it comes across as distinctly floral and lifted, with effusive aromatics to play off a core of bright red/purplish fruit. Rose petal, lavender, sweet spice, new leather and cedar appear later, adding further shades of nuance. A dollop of Cabernet Franc (10%) really marks the wine, in a positive sense. ~ 98 Vinous Media

There are just 100 cases of the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, blended from Oakville and Saint Helena fruit. Meant to be a best-of-the-best selection and blend, it does include 10% Cabernet Franc and plenty of new French oak. It's cedary and menthol-scented on the nose, those notes joining slow-to-unfurl ripe cassis and black cherry aromas. This full-bodied, velvety-textured wine finishes with refreshing crispness and ample length. ~ 96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is tight and closed with a solid core of fruit that comes through clearly. It’s full yet toned, with pretty blackberries, blackcurrants and walnuts. Hint of nutmeg, too. Firm and integrated tannins. A blend of top wines from the vintage. 90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. Best after 2026. ~ 96 James Suckling

What our customers say about us

Lithology

Napa Valley

Nestled in the storied hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, Lithology is a modern Napa Valley winery that celebrates the ancient geological forces that shape the region’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate sits on land that once formed part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant and was first planted to vines in 1975; its original stone winery was later used by H. William Harlan as the Founders Room for Promontory and the inaugural Napa Valley Reserve vintages.

In 2014, international vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose engineering background gives him a profound appreciation for soil and terroir, acquired the property and launched Lithology with a philosophy rooted in expressing place above all else. Today, the winery draws fruit from its own organic Estate Vineyard and elite sites across Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena to craft limited-production, single-vineyard wines that eloquently convey the mineral-rich soils of Napa Valley.
