About the Wine

Let’s put the world on notice. While the iconic 2021 Tignanello is rightfully commanding $165, the critic scores tell a shocking story: James Suckling actually rated the Testamatta higher at 98 Points—eclipsing Tignanello’s 96-point score.

And that was just the beginning. Jeb Dunnuck just dropped the list of the year, cementing this as the #42 Wine in the Entire World for 2025. We are talking about the absolute elite tier of global winemaking.

Meet Bibi Graetz, the innovator reshaping the Tuscan wine scene with his visionary approach. Emerging onto the scene in 2000, this former artist swiftly transformed into a cult winemaker, now revered among the top echelon of Tuscan producers.

“Testa-Matta” in Italy is someone with a strong personality, a distinctive style, and positive attitude, and creativity. No other name could describe better Bibi Graetz flagship wine. Supertuscan made with 100% Sangiovese from old vines, this wine is the result of the combination of tradition and creativity, elevating the idea of Tuscan Sangiovese and bringing the word “Supertuscan” to the next level. Testamatta wine expresses the purity, minerality, and transparency of old-vine Sangiovese. Do you have what it takes to handle such a powerful wine?

Testamatta grapes are selected and sourced from the winery's best vineyards: Vincigliata, Londa, Lamole, Montefili, Siena. Each vineyard is harvested up to 8 times, making sure all the grapes are picked at peak ripening. The 5 vineyards, characterized by old age (up to 80 yrs) are located in different areas of Tuscany: Lamole & Montefili in the heart of Chianti Classico, Vincigliata nearby Firenze and Fiesole, Londa north of Firenze, towards the Rufina valley, and Siena south of Tuscany. The grapes are hand-sorted before destemming and soft pressing. The fermentation is conducted by natural and indigenous yeasts, in open-top barriques.

The 2021 vintage was absolutely legendary—Wine Spectator exploded with a 99-point score and declared:"This might be the best vintage in Tuscany's modern era."

Tasting Notes

Jeweled ruby in the glass with a purity that telegraphs what's coming. The nose opens with kirsch, blood orange, dusty earth, coriander, and rose petals — precise, floral, and unmistakably Sangiovese in the best sense.

On the palate it's medium-bodied and weightless in feel, with a seamless texture and fine-grained tannins that invite you in immediately. There's a starburst of cherries and strawberries at the center, framed by lively acidity and an undertone of fresh soil that adds dimension without weight.

Salty, mineral, and crunchy on the close — the finish is long, elegant, and focused. Drink beautifully now; the structure suggests it will only improve through 2035.

Critical Reviews

Fabulous aromas of strawberries, orange zest and orange blossom. So pure on the nose. Very perfumed. Medium-bodied with intense linear tannins that are ultra-fine in texture. It's fresh and salty with a brightness and focus. Minerally and crisp. pH is 3.4 highlighting the strength of the acidity. Crunchy. Salty. So delicious now but this age will be incredibly well. ~ 98 James Suckling

(100% Sangiovese from north-facing vineyards at around 500m above sea level, 13.5% alcohol, 120,000 bottles produced) Ruby red, beautiful sheen. Open nose, predominantly red fruit, spices, herbs, lots of sour cherries, wild strawberries, licorice, also a touch of cool smoke, complex, playful, fresh, no signs of overripeness. On the palate, delicate, elegant, precise, top balance of delicate fruit and very good structure, the tannins are fine-grained, good acidity supports and lends freshness, it dances across the tongue and finishes with very good length on a spicy, red-fruited finale. A Burgundian Tuscan that impresses with freshness and elegance, not power and opulence. Enjoy now until 2040+. ~ 95 Adrian van Velsen - vvWine.ch

The 2021 'Testamatta' is produced from Sangiovese, utilizing vines that are roughly 40-50 years of age. Right now this is really delicious and savory, as the 'Testamatta' often needs many years in the bottle to fully unravel. The shades of dark truffles really entice on the nose, alongside wild blackberry, worn leather and plenty of damp earth notes. The palate is soft and inviting with a smooth texture and gorgeous sense of length. Really good to consume now — especially after an hour in the decanter — this beauty will surely live on for another fifteen plus years to come. ~95 Owen Bargreen

The nose starts light and sweet, with aromas of vanilla and cedar, before getting richer with notes of cherries and candied orange. An undertone of fresh soil blooms on the palate, beneath a starburst of cherries and strawberries. Silky tannins invite you in now, while lively acid suggests you should also return in a few years for more fun. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

The 2021 Testamatta is entirely Sangiovese from 35- to 50-year-old vines and translates to "crazy-head." It offers a jeweled ruby color and has a lovely bouquet on opening, with pure notes of kirsch, blood orange, dusty earth, coriander, and rose petals. It continues to the palate with a seamless feel, revealing a medium-bodied frame with fine tannins, a refreshingly weightless feel, and an elegantly long and balanced finish. Graceful and pure throughout, this lovely wine will benefit from cellaring as it matures to reveal its more tertiary and savory tones, although it sure is beautiful now. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

From a vintage I really love comes the Bibi Graetz 2021 Testamatta. This wine has dark fruit, cherry, powdered chocolate and chalky mineral. This vintage represents a turning point for this eccentric vintner who decided to change styles and focus on the red fruits and high notes. Nonetheless, this wine delivers good freshness and balance, and I like it better than the 2020 vintage that Bibi himself prefers. To me, the 2021 has more vertical freshness. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A pure, resonant red, with strawberry, cherry, rose, wild thyme, black pepper and mineral aromas and flavors. Though taut and linear now, this offers a center of ripe fruit, terrific balance and a long aftertaste of fruit, herb and mineral notes. Drink now through 2035. 1,833 cases imported. ~ 94 Wine Spectator

Bright ruby red with flint core. Youthful and fresh nose, floral, with violets and fresh cherries, light pepper spice and vegetal touch. Juicy on the palate, with vivid acidity, plus clear fruit in the mid-palate, juicy in the finish too. ~ 93 Falstaff
