About the Wine

Imagine the warmth of a sunny afternoon in Lisbon, where the air is sweet with the scent of flowers and the sea breeze. That’s exactly what you get in every sip of Horácio Simões Moscatel de Setúbal.

Horácio Simões Moscatel de Setúbal is a beautiful balance of sweetness and freshness. While other fortified wines, like Port, tend to lean into dark, heavy fruit flavors and tannic richness, Setúbal brings a lighter, more vibrant edge. The Moscatel grape delivers an aromatic profile that’s more floral and spicy, with hints of plums, walnuts, and a touch of citrus.

It’s not as dense or syrupy as some other fortified options, but it still carries a depth that’s perfect for sipping. The aging process in oak adds complexity, giving the wine a smooth, refined character with a satisfying finish that lingers gently.

The Setúbal region, just south of Lisbon, provides the ideal climate for Moscatel grapes. The warmth of the Mediterranean sun is tempered by cooling breezes from the Atlantic, creating the perfect conditions for this wine to develop its unique personality.

Crafted by the Simões family, who’ve been making wine here since 1910, this is a true labor of love. It’s made the traditional way, with patience and care, ensuring that every bottle is as rich in history as it is in flavor.

If you're looking for a sweet, fortified wine that feels lighter and more approachable than its heavier counterparts, this is it. It’s perfect for enjoying on its own or pairing with your favorite dessert or cheese, offering a fresh take on a classic style.

What our customers say about us

Horacio Simoes

Setubal, Portugal

Casa Horácio Simões is a family winery established in 1910 by José Carvalho Simões in Quinta do Anjo, Palmela, one of the historic winemaking centers of the Peninsula of Setúbal. Continuously operating as a family winery since its inception, Casa Horácio Simões has been a pillar of the winemaking community in the Peninsula of Setúbal for more than a century and serves as a benchmark for the preservation of traditional and artisanal winemaking techniques that revere the deep viticultural traditions of the region from which the family comes.

At present, three generations of this remarkable family are actively involved in the operations of the winery and the production of its wines. Horácio dos Santos Simões, who was born in 1923 and is the son of the original founder of the winery, his son Horácio dos Reis Simões, and his grandsons Pedro Camacho Simões and Luís Camacho Simões are the ones working to carry on the traditions of craftsmanship and quality that were established by their predecessors.

The estate is based around roughly 22 hectares (54 acres) of vineyards that are divided between the most recent plantings of vines that are about 27 to 35 years old, what the family terms the “survivor” vines that are roughly 75 years old, and the centenary vineyards around which the winery was originally based and whose vines exceed 100 years of age.
