About the Wine
The 2021 vintage was absolutely legendary—Wine Spectator exploded with a 99-point score and declared: "This might be the best vintage in Tuscany's modern era."
"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." -Gustav Mahler. The Mazzei family has been carrying the torch since 1435 and has a history of producing award-winning wine since its inception. The family's Castello di Fonterutoli Estate was one of the first to produce the best-selling Italian wine, Chianti Classico. Twenty-four generations later, through excellence and tradition, they remain one of the premier estates throughout all of Italy.
For 26 generations, the Mazzei family has been producing benchmark Italian wines from their historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Tuscany and more recently in the Maremma, Sicily, and the Veneto. The passion, commitment, and expertise that goes into these expressive wines are a reflection of the Mazzei’s spirit of innovation and respect for each property’s unique terroir.
"Concerto" was born in 1981, and was a forerunner and major player as one of the original "Super Tuscan" wines. Built around a blend primarily made of Sangiovese, this wine is able to convey the local terroir around a native variety while being bolstered by the Cabernet Sauvignon that is blended in.
Aging: French oak for 16 to 18 months.
Tasting Notes
Concerto di Fonterutoli is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is a stunning example of balance and finesse, with aromas of vivid blackcurrant, lavender, and iris, wrapped in gentle spice and subtle earthy notes. The palate is vibrant and fresh, showcasing red and dark berries, dried citrus peel, and a hint of chili pepper and spicy herbs. The wine has a juicy acidity, fine tannins, and a chalky, powdery texture that adds depth and concentration. With its smooth, silky finish and excellent length, this wine is poised to evolve beautifully, becoming even more expressive after a few years of aging.
Critical Reviews
Despite a hot summer in 2021 the nights were cool, which allowed healthy grapes to ripen completely and contributed to the finesse of the tannins, and the Mazzei family has taken a big leap forward in quality, resulting in a wine with increased purity, transparency and finesse. The aromas are clear, bright, and precise with notes of vivid, blackcurrant wrapped in gentle spice. The acidity is vibrant, the flavours are bright and vivacious, and the tannins are fine and beautifully integrated within the wine. This is a stunning wine with effortlessness, ease and flow across the palate. ~97 Decanter
The Mazzei 2021 Concerto di Fonterutoli shows a lifted bouquet with floral aromas of lavender, iris and delicate earthy tones at the back. There is plenty of primary fruit over well-integrated oak and soft tannins. Rainfall was happily abundant in this vintage, and the harvest was extremely rewarding, resulting in very healthy grapes. Analytical results underline fruit concentration, high polyphenolic values and a good sugar to acidity ratio. ~96 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
This is spicy and vibrant with a mix of red and dark berries with dried citrus peel, chili pepper and spicy herbs. Hints of bark, too. Full with layers of polished tannins and chalky, powdery texture. Juicy acidity coming through. Shows depth and concentration. Racy and long. Better from 2026. ~95 James Suckling
The 2021 Concerto di Fonterutoli, Mazzei's Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is plush and resonant to the core. Punchy, red-toned fruit, blood orange, cedar and spice all come together effortlessly, with plush, silky tannins that wrap it all together. Today the Sangiovese is super-expressive. ~94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
