About the Wine
The Siepi vineyard, owned by Mazzei family since 1435, has always been a model farm, still managed today with the same kind of respect. Due to its unique location, a special microclimate, and the foresight in the early 1980s to plant Merlot to complement Sangiovese, Siepi has produced wine that is perfectly balanced between elegance, power, and complexity.
"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." -Gustav Mahler. The Mazzei family has been carrying the torch since 1435 and has a history of producing award-winning wine since its inception. The family's Castello di Fonterutoli Estate was one of the first to produce the best-selling Italian wine, Chianti Classico. Twenty-four generations later, through excellence and tradition, they remain one of the premier estates throughout all of Italy.
For 26 generations, the Mazzei family has been producing benchmark Italian wines from their historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Tuscany and more recently in the Maremma, Sicily, and the Veneto. The passion, commitment, and expertise that goes into these expressive wines are a reflection of the Mazzei’s spirit of innovation and respect for each property’s unique terroir.
2021 was one if the best vintages in Tuscany in recent times, Wine Spectator awarded it 98 points.
Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new), barriques (Merlot), tonneaux (Sangiovese), followed by four months in concrete tanks.
Tasting Notes
Made from equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese, intense aromas of graphite, blackberries, and violets, intertwined with subtle notes of tar and asphalt. The full-bodied palate is rich yet creamy, with a crunchy texture that delivers vibrant energy and impressive length. Sweet red fruits like strawberry, raspberry, and plum shine through, lifted by fresh acidity that adds a mouthwatering quality. Tannins are fine yet firm, providing a seamless structure to this complex, youthful wine. Will age beautifully for decades to come.
Critical Reviews
An opulent yet tensioned young red with blackberries, violets and black olive skin character. Full-bodied. But has so much energy and focus. Goes on for minutes. A blend of merlot and sangiovese. Best after 2028. ~98 James Suckling
Intense blackcurrant on the nose, baked and ripe, so expressive and inviting with little hints of liquorice and tar. Supple, generous, juicy and bright, this 50/50 Sangiovese Merlot is so well crafted and harmonious - rich, broad and full in the mouth, it runs with life and energy and such underlying vigour. You can feel the intensity and sculpting that is evident here. This wine is no wallflower, but it's so neat and beautifully presented. I love the tannins, massive but controlled and a perfect counterpart to the fresh and ripe red and black fruits with black pepper, tar, tobacco and bitter orange as well as soft floral notes. The brightness is a great match for the depth and complexity delivered by a nuanced glass of wine that has so much to say. I love the tannins and the sense of direction and confidence. It's still in its brooding, flashy, youthful phase with plenty of warmth and spice, but it's a beauty. ~97 Decanter
This top-shelf wine from Mazzei is a blend of 50-50 Merlot and Sangiovese. The Sangiovese goes into tonneaux and the Merlot ages in 70% new barrique for 18 months. The 2021 Siepi (in a heavy glass bottle) opens to sweet fruit nuances of cooked cherry, blackberry preserves, cinnamon and nutmeg. This full-bodied wine is supple and very soft in terms of mouthfeel, and its flavor profile is expansive and all-encompassing. This wine is balanced and seamless, and the 2021 vintage is certainly one of the best editions of Siepi we've seen so far. ~96+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
The 2021 Siepi is impressive. Blue/purple fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and mocha are beautifully balanced. This lush, juicy blend of Sangiovese and Merlot is, as so often, a real charmer. The 2021 is exceptionally elegant and polished, certainly one of the best editions of recent times. Nevertheless, I believe that the Siepi would benefit from longer ageing in wood or in glass, as it is coming to market too early for a wine of its size and potential. ~96+ Vinous Media
The nose is savory, warm and tangy, with aromas of hot tar, balsamic glaze, espresso, dried figs and blackberries. On the palate, black cherries and dark chocolate enhance that rich blackberry note, while undertones of bitter citrus pith provide balance. Tannins are polished, but grippy, especially as heat creeps up on the finish. This remains a benchmark for its elegance, but also for the sheer pleasure it delivers. Drink 2028–2041. ~96 Wine Enthusiast
Rich, deep, dark ruby purple. Compact and dense nose, displaying notes of currant, blackberry, ripe cherry and fresh herbal notes in the background. Lots of polished, very well-integrated tannins on the palate, smooth and long finish, juicy and fine texture. ~96 Falstaff
