About the Wine
Decanter magazine said, “Primitivo is practically synonymous with Puglia and the south of Italy.” We say, if you truly want to experience the quality of a fine Primitivo di Manduria, you need the 2020 Lu Rapppaio.
It must be said that the Primitivo di Manduria is slightly different from the rest of Puglia. Manduria has a privileged location, right in the middle of the Salento peninsula. This allows the marine breeze coming from both the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea to refresh the vineyard. The soil is composed of limestone with iron oxide fossils, giving it a distinctive red color. This soil is also known as Terra Rossa and it is typical of the Mediterranean region. The climate is ideal too, with mild winters and extremely hot summers, and according to Decanter, "Primitivo is the most sun-loving grape I have seen."
If you love bold, full-bodied, fruit forward, complex red wines, you’ll adore this Primitivo.
Italy's star continues to rise in the wine world, and Puglia is one to watch. According to Wine Spectator, the future of this beautiful southern region (also known as the “Tuscany of the South”) looks increasingly bright thanks to the fact that “producers are upgrading and investing in vineyards and winery infrastructure and embracing new philosophies and techniques.”
This bottle comes from Rocca delle Macìe, a name that carries serious weight in Italian wine. The story starts not in the vineyard, but on a movie set—founder Italo Zingarelli made his mark producing cult Italian films with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill before swapping the cameras for the rolling hills of Tuscany. In 1973, he bought the Le Macìe estate, and the family has been making waves in wine ever since.
Today, Rocca delle Macìe is run by Italo’s son Sergio and his wife Daniela. The company now spans over 500 hectares, with vineyards in Chianti Classico, Morellino di Scansano, and—importantly for Mandus—in the sun-drenched south of Puglia. That’s where the Pietra Pura line was born: a passion project dedicated to Primitivo at its finest.
Tasting Notes
100% Primitivo. Intense ruby red color with purple reflection. A wine with a wide range of aromas of ripe cherries, plumes and pleasant notes of cacao and vanilla. In the mouth it's a wine of great structure and with a good balance.
Critical Reviews
Red wine made exclusively from Primitivo, aged for four months in oak barrels. It displays ripe and compote-like red and black fruits, followed by floral, earthy, herbal, and sweet spice notes, which are confirmed on the palate. Well-made in its profile with a greater sensation of sweetness, it has refreshing acidity and firm, sandy-textured tannins, which bring a certain balance to the overall wine. Ideal for aged cheeses. 14.5% alcohol. ~90 Revista Adega
